The other strand of this book covers Cukor’s life as a wealthy homosexual at a time when same sex relationships were ignored or discouraged. Cukor’s famously lavish house and garden became the setting for discrete meetings of Californian gays but also a place of loneliness for a man who never seemed to find a long term companion. If Cukor cannot be considered an auteur alongside Hitchcock or Wilder, he was one of the master craftsman of the Hollywood studio system and one of the most skilful handlers of actors of his time. An intriguing book that makes me want to rewatch his movies.
