“The watch must be original in design and conception and, when completed, beautiful in appearance.” ―George Daniels, Watchmaking
While admired for their lucidity of appearance and unadorned dials, Daniels’s watches feature a raft of exquisite complications, such as chronographs, thermometers and power reserve indicators. His more intricate designs also incorporate perpetual calendars and minute repeaters, as well as indictors displaying mean solar and sidereal time, the age and phases of the moon, and the equation of time.
Most significant of all Daniels’s contributions to the field of mechanical horology is his revolutionary invention: the co-axial escapement. This, the first noteworthy advance in practical watch design since Thomas Mudge’s lever escapement of 1754, helped to save a mechanical watch industry in danger of being overwhelmed by mass-produced quartz wristwatches.
Detailed photographs of all of Daniels’s unique watches (both dial and movement) can be seen here, along with rare and previously unpublished images from Daniels’s own archive of photographs and working drawings.
Michael Clerizo worked closely with George Daniels in the preparation of this book, the artist recounting episodes from his life and career over their innumerable conversations at his home on the Isle of Man. That biography helps ensure the book is a fitting and authentic tribute to the greatest watchmaker of the modern era.

But there are pictures! Among them are dozens of breathtaking, superbly printed color photos of Daniels' watches, many larger than life, inside and out, in nearly microscopic detail. With unprecedented clarity the photos show Daniels' hand-engraved and rose-engine turned dials and the graceful shapes and immaculate finish of the hundreds of inner components that cannot be seen outside the case. Daniels was both artist and technical innovator; both sides of his creative work are exhibited beautifully here.
Then there's Daniels' life story, so unlikely you would think it fiction. He rose from grinding, Dickensian poverty to the inner circles of British aristocracy, propelled by a formidable intellect, an heroic work ethic, unmatched artistic skill and unstoppable ambition. What a life! What a book! If I had a hat, it would be off to Michael Clerizo.

I am also a fan of the beauty of the design of his watches and there are no others which can compete with his work.
I read biographies to learn about other people and how they think and live. George Daniels was such an inspiration coming from a "street urchin" to "the man with million dollar hands" that his story and the beauty of his creations will inspire even if you don't have a passion for watches.
The photo's are superb and that alone would justify buying this book

Let me answer that question. I needn't have worried.
Whilst there is necessarily some duplication of content about Daniels's early life (his life events are hardly going to have changed) Michael Clerizo offers us a rather different perspective. It's clear that Michael Clerizo had a great deal of respect and affection for George Daniels, and it shows. Whereas Daniels's autobiography comes across as a little stiff and stilted in places (and perhaps with a whiff of self importance on a few occasions), Michael Clerizo shows us a much warmer and more rounded man who is generous with his time and his knowledge. If you'll pardon the pun, you get a much better feel for what made George Daniels tick.
The format of the book is generous (perhaps even slightly unwieldy), but the illustrations are excellent and generous - some are familiar from other books, but there are many that are new to me.
I have quite a lot of horology books on my bookshelves, including those by George Daniels. This book deserves to stand proud in their company.
It is packed with information and brilliant photos of George Daniels handmade Pocket Watches and Watches.
The book traces his life from childhood ,his early beginnings in Watchmaking through to making his masterpieces in Horology and the development of his Co- Axial Escapement.
It now sits proudly next to a signed copy of "Practical Watch Escapement" by George.
The best Horological book of 2013.
