Georges Bank is a nineteenth century tale of power and greed set in the stormy waters off Gloucester, Massachusetts and in the steamy fishermen brothels ashore. Maggie O’Grady, an Irish immigrant, becomes pregnant after an encounter with her first employer, a rich Boston merchant, who discards her penniless in a Gloucester brothel. Maggie raises her son in the brothel and in time finds love with a fisherman. The book chronicles their struggles at sea and ashore. It climaxes in a courtroom battle fought by two fishing widows against a heartless boat owner, and Maggie’s personal battle with the Boston merchant for the affections of their son.

Bradley Bagshaw grew up in Gloucester and has lived with the sea since exploring Gloucester Harbor in a beat-up dory at age ten. Sailing instructor was his first job at sixteen, which was followed by work on the docks as a stevedore and a forklift driver. Then he was off to Exeter, Bowdoin, MIT, and Harvard Law School, and to a career as a lawyer suing fishing companies for mistreating their fishermen. Starting in 2007, Bradley and his wife sailed eleven thousand miles from Seattle to Tahiti and back on a thirty-nine-foot cutter. On that trip he conceived the idea for Georges Bank, his first novel.

George's Bank was recommended to me by a friend who knows I like historic novels. Prior to reading this, I did not have a true sense of what like was like in a New England fishing town in the nineteenth century. This is a well-written book with terrific character development and multi-layered intertwined stories of the fishermen and the "working" women they depended on. The book makes one aware of both the the day to day life struggles of the fishermen and these women as well as the larger political and conditions issues surrounding the fishing industry at the time. A worthwhile good read.

A legal drama bringing in timely and historical elements: immigration, legal rights of rich and poor, abolitionism, suffrage movement, LGBT, and maritime law. A coming of age story and more, featuring a sympathetic female protagonist, who finds strength and independence as a brothel owner in her community which is deeply influenced by the perilous and pervasive fishing industry of the region. Would make a great television period drama series.

Enjoyed reading Brad Bagshaw's "Georges Bank," an historical novel in the tradition of Pat Conroy's "Prince of Tides" or Joseph Conrad's "Typhoon." Baghaw's page turner takes us to Gloucester, Massachusetts in the era from 1860-85. We get to know the fishermen and their wives in the days when fishing off George's Bank was one of the world's most dangerous callings. Most enthralling was the contentious courtroom battle fought by fishermen's wives against fishing boat owners.

They say we shouldn’t travel during this plague year, but author Bradley Bagshaw proves them wrong. Reading the words of Georges Bank magically transported me from my armchair to Gloucester on the coast of Massachusetts. On top of that, the book was a virtual time machine that plopped me down there in the rough-and-tumble 19th century world of fishermen, boat owners, Irish immigrants, and Boston Brahmins. The story is gripping, and Maggie O’Grady is a protagonist I’ll not soon forget. Bravo!

The characters in this book are beautifully described, and felt like friends as the book unfolded. The love story kept me reading, but the depiction of this era of US history was a wonderful glimpse into the history of the fishing/maritime industry - the peril faced by those who went to sea, and those left to wait on the shore.

The authenticity the author brings to the people, the town (Gloucester) and the death defying (inducing?) fishing industry is compelling. The sweep of the book is wide, taking us from the famine blighted shores of Ireland to the steamy halls of a New England bordello and ending in an electrifying courtroom drama. This book has something for everyone. A must read.
