Product Description
This classroom rocks and minerals collection provides students with hands-on experience testing physical properties. The collection and materials are designed to correlate with standard earth science texts, and can be used for demonstrating the physical properties of minerals, including hardness, specific gravity, luster, tenacity, cleavage, fracture, streak, and magnetism. The collection includes 75 rock and mineral samples (measuring approximately 1-2"), a streak plate, a magnifier, a collection index sheet, and a study guide (with rock classification and rock cycle charts). The samples fall into 1 of 7 categories- minerals in the scale of hardness, streak-luster-cleavage-fracture-specific gravity, rock forming minerals, ores of metals and nonmetals, igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks. This collection is great both at home and in the classroom, designed for grades 4-12.
Science education products incorporate applied math and science principles into classroom projects. Teachers in pre-K, elementary, and secondary classrooms use science education kits and products alongside science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum to demonstrate STEM concepts and real-world applications through hands-on activities. Science education projects include a broad range of activities, such as practical experiments in engineering, aeronautics, robotics, energy, chemistry, physics, biology, and geology.Important information

UPDATE: The price has nearly doubled on this since I bought it. Too bad.
The description of the samples being 1"-2" can be misleading and set the wrong expectation. They are certainly not 1" x 2". The majority appear to be between 1" to 1.5" long measured at the longest distance (diagonally). None are 2". Several are very close to 1" and a couple are under 1". One in my set arrived broken. The organizing tray compartments are about 1" x 1.75".

I plan to use as a guide to identify other rocks/minerals I find. To this end, as there are a lot of samples, I decided to build an alphabetical index to the samples, so if I had a guess as to what my newly found rock is, I could quickly and easily find it in the sample case to compare. I did this on Excel, input all the samples, and then sorted alphabetically. See photo
There is no reason I should have had to do that, for only a few pennies extra, this could have been printed on the back of the numerical guide to the samples, or another sheet of paper.
Ergo, the 4 star review, not 5.

Most "rock collections" sold by others seem to be very small rocks, even chips of rocks. And, for the price, this seemed like a better value.
I was right. My husband loves this set. The rocks are labeled and they're in larger sizes that adults can actually work with. If you wanted to check rocks & minerals at a local hiking spot against these sample, it's easy.
We're delighted, and recommend it to anyone buying a ready-to-go rock collection for a child or an adult.
