Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Gerber 31-000802 Paraframe two blade knife with saw blade and drop point blade. There is simplicity to this knife that relates as much to function as it does to form. It’s a breeze to open. The clip point blade configuration is ideal for cutting in close quarters. Openness rules the day where the handle is concerned, there's more air than metal, so it’s quite lightweight and quite easy to keep clean. Clip a Paraframe into your pocket, and you're fully equipped to take care of business. Your only challenge is figuring out which one.

Sometimes reviews tell more about the reviewers than about the product and it seemed pretty obvious that the 2 previous reviewers knew nothing about knives. The first clues were that both reviewers refer to the knife having a "serrated" blade. Even if they couldn't read the description or interpret the picture, once they received the knife it should be obvious that it has a regular blade and a SAW! I'll admit most people don't really have a use for a saw in and everyday-carry knife and I'll continue to use the knife or 2 that I currently use for that purpose. The saw clearly qualifies this knife more appropriately for camping or hiking. If you don't have a use for this type of knife, don't buy it. If you do, this one is an excellent choice. As you'd expect, the claims of loose blades opening on their own are as ridiculous as they sound. I don't know if these reviews were done by the same person or whether they had an agenda or not, but if it smells like BS it probably is. I've owned quite a few knives over the years from several different brands and, as usual, this Gerber doesn't disappoint. It's been a while since I've actually carried an old-fashioned lock-back knife like grandpa had, but the lock-back feature for the saw blade is actually a pretty clever complement to the VERY reliable liner lock on the drop-point blade. It keeps the operation of the 2 blades separate. You would literally have to break the 1.2mm liner with a vise and a pipe wrench or similar to defeat it any way other than the proper way. Initially, the blade is sharp enough to shave with but I've never had a lot of success getting my other Gerbers that sharp again. For what it is, this is a 5-star knife.

I spend a lot of time outdoors and own many top quality knives. I always carry a folder on my person and a sheath knife in my bag or pack. This knife has replaced my Wenger Ranger as my constant companion. There is nothing wrong with the Wenger, indeed it's a wonderful knife. But this Gerber is thinner and quite a bit stronger and does away with the extra gadgets that I don't want or need. It's a knife and saw, and it is quite functional for both uses.

Both blades are titanium coated, which provides superior corrosion protection. The unusually heavy duty liner lock on the main blade is very strong making the blade a bit stiff to unlock and close, but I'd rather it be too strong than too weak. The saw uses a lockback which is also a bit stiff. Both blades are also a little difficult to open with the thumb studs, but I can open them one handed with some effort. Again I'd rather it be stiff than loose. The blade won't be opening in your pocket, for certain.

The "paraframe" design allows for easy cleaning and lubricating, a definate plus for a "using" knife that sees a lot of heavy use. Dirt, grit and pocket lint flush right out of this knife with a quick rinse in a stream. A couple of shakes and a wipe down to get rid of the water, followed by a few drops of oil are a quick and easy maintenance procedure. This is a major improvement over the Wenger's solid frame construction which is difficult to clean effectively.

The main blade is typical "Gerber sharp" and so far it's stayed that way. Historically Gerber's are a bit tougher to sharpen, but hold their edge longer. I expect this knife will follow that pattern. The cross cut saw is an effective design found on many other quality knives and it works well.

Its a great knife and saw combo plus its a gerber so that spells quality. The saw is extremely sharp but the knife was a little dull so I sharpened it with my stone now its like a razor. just a great knife.
