This is a great, well-designed, efficient tool for field dressing a deer. With the deer on its back or hung by its neck, puncture the skin right below the sternum, thrusting upward to avoid cutting any of guts, etc. Then insert the tip of the tool into the hole far enough to engage the full depth of the skin, then slide the knife down and with a slight uplift to keep the skin clear of the guts.

The tool uses inexpensive, generally-available, standard utility or box cutter blades, This is important since the blade should be replaced each time it is used to field dress a deer.

There is only one problem with the knife (and the reason for no fifth star): The machine screw that holds the blade in place is countersunk, with the head tapered. Tighten the screw too much and the head exerts a side force which splits the frame neatly, in the same place every time. The problem is one that Gerber (or the user) could easily fix: Use a pan head screw, with a flat bottom instead of the countersunk head. (Then, over-tightening will only strip the serrated nut on the back side.) Gerber could countersink the hole so the pan head is still flush with the surface of frame, preserving design elegance.

Update: I based the last paragraph regarding the problem with the screw splitting the frame on two that I have used for years. The two had split several years ago and even though still useable, I ordered two new ones. On inspection of the new product, it appears that Gerber has fixed the problem by using a countersunk screw with a shorter and less tapered head. I do not expect any problem going forward. I upgraded my rating from 4 to 5 stars.

The blade cuts through most things with ease and precision; however, the sheath included does not keep it entirely safe to remove or use when in dire need. The two rings feel almost useless, but do offer a better handle to keep the hands safe when using the tool.

It comes with the knife, the sheath, and a few extra blades when the blade inserted becomes too dull to use.

Update 4-4-2017 - Couldn't unscrew retention screw to put in new blade! The screws phillips notches tore out. Soft metal, yet torqued in there hard. Had to discard. I now just use my Havalon to open up the gut sack. I may elect to get another one at some point though, because this thing did cut thru astonishingly fast.

On 11-1-2015 I finally got the chance to use this device on my first deer. It lets you cut thru the skin covering the gut area ridiculously fast without having to worry about messing up any of the innards. I did the gutless method on my deer, but wanted to skin the hide from the midline outward with the end goal of having the hide like a throw-rug I could use to cover like a coffee table if you will. I only bother to mention this because I personally did not use this device to actually cut thru the muscle wall of the abdomen, so I cannot comment on that.

i'd thought it would be useful for boxes and other trimming tasks. But there is not much for it that a pocket knife cannot handle easier. Perhaps if you are skinning deer; but i consider hunting obscene. For ordinary household tasks, useless. For garden, yard trimming and pruning, a machete is better.
The thing comes sealed up as if it were precious and perishable. Struggle to open the heavy sealed plastic resulted in sliced finger. So figure in time to visit the ER.

Very easy to use with the handle. I really like how the blade can be changed out with a standard blade. This helped a lot skinning as this tool ensures a straighter cut than a knife and does not dull the blade as fast because it is cutting just the skin, not the hair. Last week I hunted over 30 sea otters and this was a huge help in skinning them out. They can get large, over 100 lbs. so it is good to have a good set of tools to get the job done right and not wear you out as much so you can do more.

Dazwischen in Sandwichbauweise Pappe.
