This is one of the better Tanto style blades profiles I have encountered. It is still a tanto so if you are looking for an "all purpose knife" for hunting or fishing this will probably disappoint you. The tanto was designed as a piercing/puncturing blade type and because of that really only had 2 blade angles that allow it to cut. That is either on the blade tip or along the blade in an awkward flat hold position. Unfortunately Gerber discontinued the more well rounded drop point style blade of the Yary II so the tanto is the only blade profile available new. I am not real fond of the handle on the Yari II. The original Yari had handles made of micarta. These made for a nice firm grip and a neutral feel. The Yari II has blade handles made of machined aluminum. They look nice and feel pretty good at room temperature but the black aluminum in the sun will get so hot that you cannot hold the knife. This is also the case in extremely cold environments when the handle will become so cold that it sticks to you hand and burns you with frostbite. The S30V blade material is the best knife steel (IMO) available to the mass market. It sharpens pretty easy and will hold an edge for a long time. It is also very corrosion resistant so you can take in fishing and not need to wipe it down with oil immediately after using. Once you start into the premium knife steels (of the stainless type) you will quickly find that stainless is a varying grey area. If you don't believe my try slicing an orange with you knife and give it a day before you clean it. ATS34, CM154, 440C steels will all show light rust along the blade edge, S30V will be almost completely free of rust. The sheath is a well made piece that works well for southpaws also, it is MOLLE compatible and will attach to some of the popular pistol holsters also.

When this knife arrived about 1/16th" of the tip was bent. I just broke it off and put the edge back on it. The edge gets extremely sharp (I use a fine Indian oil stone) and holds an edge for a long time. During deer season I cleaned 3 deer with it without resharpening and could still shave hair off my arm with it. I took it backpacking with it and built a shelter, as we didn't bring a tent, I cut down 6 3" dia. trees and stripped kindling and cleaned a couple of fish with it and it was still sharp. My only complaint is that the sheath is crap.

If you are looking for a knife that is really good in both quality and good look, this is it. This is the unicorn of the unicorns, the navy seals of the navy and the special forces of the army. It's the cream of the crop, roger? Roger.

I purchased this item for fishing. The S30V steel should be better than standard stainless steel knives used previously.
The partial serration is useful for cutting fibrous materials. The knife's non-serrated portion was not as sharp as it could
be.

This is one bad ass knife! I bought it for my full tang survival knife for search and rescue and has been put through the toughest test you can put a knife through. The sheath it comes with gives you many mounting options. Light weight for its size and incredibly sharp. You can't go wrong with Portland,OR made Gerber knives.
