I loved the concept of this product and couldnt wait to try it out once it was delivered. The knives in this set are top notch and very sharp. They also feel great in the hand with a secure, comfortable grip. This is an easily portable set and nicely usable for tailgating, picnicing, boating... not just camping. Haven't had a chance to test it out yet but just from the initial unpacking, it feels sturdy and resilient. Gerber has never disappointed and I doubt this will be the first time. It also seems very practical since its basically an all in one tool. You have your cutting board, knives and drawer to put them, sharpening tool and an extra compartment to put either disinfecting towels or small forks or spoons. I would highly recommend it, but I still need to take it for a test drive. However, it is not expensive and just for its practicality alone is well worth the price. If it turns out to be as good as it looks then I would say buy it before they run out. But again, take this review with abgrain of salt.

I first saw this product in one of the big named sporting goods stores and thought it was pretty nifty, until I saw the ridiculous price! So I found it cheaper here on Amazon. I purchased the set for use in our camper, but I like the knives so much that we use them in the house all the time. They are solid, sturdy, and sharp. They are comfortable to handle, easy to clean, and perform much better than the knives in our German made kitchen set.

I gave this set a four star rating overall because of the board/case design. This item was supposedly designed for "camping". With that in mind, this is where I feel the board/case design fails... 1) Its heavy and large, which makes it a silly extravagance for backpacking. 2) The cutting surface is "exposed", where all sorts of nasties can collect on it, so it needs to be washed before each use.

We long since gave up tenting, so the board/case is okay in our plush clean camper. But its too bad they didn't design it differently. Perhaps with a board stowed inside so it would be clean and ready when you wanted to use it. As well as being easy to replace once it becomes too scuffed for safe use. (Which you know, eventually, it will.)

Missing Ceramic Sharpener

I got my cutting board and I was super excited to see that it was exactly what I expected.... well that was until I checked out the knife sharpener. While there is a place to run the knife through, the ceramic sharpening piece itself was not there. I’m disappointed to find this defect because overall, this would have been a good purchase.

Der erste Versuch, die Messerserie eines Werkzeugherstellers zu kaufen, erbrachte zwar sehr schöne, praktische und scharfe Messer, doch in Punkto Haltbarkeit konnten sie gegen die Langweiler aus Solingen nicht anstinken. Auf das Gerber-Paket stieß ich durch die Amazon-Empfehlung bei der Suche nach einem Klappspaten. Die Idee war schön, aber Gerber ist nun mal kein Hersteller von Küchenmessern und so haben die beiden Messer im Set in Punkto Klingenbeschaffenheit und Handlichkeit eben auch mehr Ähnlichkeit mit einer Axt, als mit einem Küchenmesser, und damit soll nicht behauptet werden, dass sie nicht scharf wären. Die Klingen sind steinhart.
Das Schneidebrett ist aus gewöhnlichem Kunststoff, von Selbstheilung keine Spur und es ist erbärmlich klein. Kompaktes Equipment ist ja beim Camping durchaus ein Vorteil, aber es muss trotzdem zweckmäßig sein. Immerhin kann man sich mit dem Messer aus dem nächstbesten Baum ein passendes Schneidebrett hacken. Hat man sich allerdings auf diese Überlegung erst einmal eingelassen, ist es jedoch sinnvoller, die Campingaxt von Gerber zu kaufen. Erstens ist die billiger, zweitens kleiner, drittens leichter und was das Schneideergebnis bei Tomaten, Mozzarella, Steak, Fisch und Brot angeht, den Messern absolut ebenbürtig.
Das Set hat Chic, keine Frage und die Messer sind scharf, aber zur Küchenarbeit taugen sie nicht und für diesen Preis muss mehr drin sein, als ein Produkt, über das man bestenfalls sagen kann, dass es besser als Nichts ist.
Noch zu erwähnen wäre, dass der Schlitz an der Seite keine praktische Meserhalterung ist, sondern eine Schärfvorrichtung für die Messer. Ob es was taugt? Schwer zu sagen. Ich ziehe meine Messer immer mit einem Stein ab.
