GERBER 31-001742 GDC Zip Blade
Daily Carry Zipper Knife
Gerber knows being prepared isn’t a state of being so much as a philosophy. Which is why having the right tool on hand is about little things that make the difference. Sometimes the job’s as simple as cutting twine or slicing open a box, but try those things without a blade enough times and you’ll appreciate the compact efficiency of the GDC Zip Blade.
Part of Gerber’s Daily Carry collection, this Zip Blade is the bulldog of utility knives. Squat enough to fit in the palm of your hand, it has enough muscle to strip wire, cut cardboard, and slice through toughest of clamshell packaging.
Ever ready Blade
The quick-release clip lets you remove this tool with one hand, leaving your other one free to steady a load or keep things aligned. When open, a frame lock keeps the compact .68-inch fine edge blade secure, so there’s no wobble when you’re powering through a cut. A built-in fob lets you attach it to the zipper of your jacket or bag, so it’s close at hand when you need it.
- Compact .68-inch fine edge utility blade
- Frame lock for improved security
- Zipper attachment for easy access
- Quick-release clip for swift removal
- Overall Length: 2.26"
- Blade Length: .68"
- Closed Length: 1.70"
- Steel Type: 7Cr17

Daily Carry is all about tools that integrate easily into your lifestyle. The GDC Zip Blade is designed to do just that. This light but tough fine edge utility blade includes a fob for attachment to the zipper of a backpack, seat bag, or coat. The quick-release clip allows for the tool to be easily removed and reattached, and the blade features a frame lock for safety. Having this tool on your pack will get you out of more jams that you’ll be able to count, and even when it’s not in use it just looks damn good.

Really difficult to open without hurting/bending your finger nail.
Hard to sharpen without damaging the outer enclosure.
Limited functionality/usability due to blade size.
Cheap Chinesium steel
I really wanted to love this little guy but it really is a pain to open up. I tried oiling it, working the pivot, and bending back the frame lock slightly. That all helped but it’s still tough to pop open. I wish they ditched the frame lock and just went with a slip joint. That would have gone a long way. It also came very dull out of the package and with an uneven/compound grind toward the tip. I had to dismantle it in order to sharpen it without damaging the frame, which is a pain. The PVD coating is also beginning to wear away along the nail nick from the break-in process.
Overall, it’s has a home on my jacket for now until it eventually falls off. I doubt it’ll get much use regardless.
If you want a tiny, sturdy, re-sharpenable, durable blade this is great.
If you want a neat little gadget to hang on your pack, this is great.
If you want to solve all of your EDC needs on the cheap you probably need to keep looking.
Compact yet yields enough grip to handle safely.
Durable steel frame with blade lock
Limited to light tasks
Nylon strap/plastic release susceptible to breaking
I was looking for an everyday knife that could attach to my keychain and not have to think about. The Gerber GDC series Zip Blade is a very handy and compact knife which stores easily and does the job when I need a rudimentary way to open or trim something in a pinch.
When open, the blade locks safely into place and the compact frame is large enough to leverage small jobs.
Upon receiving my Zip Blade, I removed the nylon strap and attached the frame directly to my keychain to prevent loosing the knife. Gerber didn't put much effort into supplying a sturdy enough band for me, so I just got rid of the strap all together.
Overall I'm very happy with my Zip Blade and use it frequently throughout the week. If you are looking for a handy and compact light use knife, I highly recommend the Gerber GDC Zip Blade.
As for TSA, take your chances as you will, but I'm willing to bet if you put this on a jacket and threw it in the bin with some other stuff, they would not catch this.
My first knife and multi-tool as a kid was a Gerber and I keep going back for more of their tools. This one doesn't do anything else, but it does just about anything you can think of to do with a blade. Feels like a part of me at this point. If you're like me and feel naked without some kind of blade on your person, this is well worth it.
