I have hunted for many, many years and a good knife is essential in field dressing game. I hunt deer almost exclusively and have field dressed hundreds over the years. Like anything else, having the right knife for the task at hand makes all the difference. Do I absolutely need a gut hook knife? The answer is no. A great knife without the gut hook is all I need. However, I've read other reviews that stated 'if you know how to field dress a deer, you shouldn't need a gut hook'. I DO NOT agree with that statement. Make no mistake, the gut hook makes field dressing a deer much, much easier. Without the 'hook', especially for the novice, one does risk puncturing the paunch or intestines, which is something you need to avoid at all cost. You simply never want to taint the great taste of your venison by making that mistake. The gut hook eliminates the chance of that happening entirely, when opening the body cavity of the deer. The gut hook really is like unzipping the animal....it's that easy. Even for someone with lots of experience, the gut hook makes the task far easier, whether one wants to admit it or not.
As to this particular knife, I've now been using this exact type for several years now and it's the only knife I'll use. First of all, the blade is easy to sharpen when needed and this blade flat out holds its' edge very, very, well. I've had some very expensive knives over the years, and this blade will stand up to the best of them. As long as you know how to sharpen a knife properly, you're in business. I use a set of stones to sharpen my knives and I highly recommend you do as well. The handle material on this knife makes for a very comfortable feel and the sure grip the material gives you speaks volumes for safety.

I have owned one of these knives for five years. It is very well designed, retains its edge, and has a sure grip. It has been very effective as a gutting and skinning knife for whitetail deer. I recently bought one for my dad due to its quality and value.

The Gerber Gator is one of the best deer skinning knives on the market and compared to its $70+ competitors, it is hard to beat.
