Picking Up Finger-Feeding

At around 8 months, your Crawler will be able to grasp and pick up small pieces of food. She won’t have mastered this yet, and she may start by using her entire hand and all her fingers, but let her experiment. With practice, she’ll refine her finger movements and develop the ability to skillfully pick up one piece of food with just her thumb and forefinger. Don’t worry about how messy finger-feeding can be. It helps develop motor skills, particularly hand-eye coordination, and it makes her feel more independent. Foods fit for finger-feeding are:

  • Small bite-sized pieces of soft-cooked vegetables or soft fruits, like ripe banana pieces.
  • A texture that dissolves quickly in her mouth, like grain snacks or yogurt snacks made especially for Crawlers.
  • Foods that are easy to pick up, like well-cooked pasta pieces.

Babies at the Crawler stage still have small tummies, so it’s best to offer three meals and two snacks a day. Snacks play an important role in a healthy diet, and with all sorts of different shapes and sizes to choose from, can help her master self-feeding. Since this is when your baby learns to mash and chew, the first snacks you choose should dissolve easily. When she starts to get the hang of it, she can try more textured snacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I know when my child is ready for Graduates products?
Graduates offers a line of products that are appropriate for the Crawler, Toddler, or Toddler 2+ (ages 2 years and up) stage of your child’s development. Read the package for the developmental cues that indicate your child may ready for each product.

My baby is a picky eater. How can I get her to try new foods?
Your baby is growing up right before your eyes! She laughs. She waves “bye-bye.” And she may turn her head away from the spoon if she doesn’t want to try a new food. If that sounds familiar, here are some hints for feeding your finicky eater:

  • Offer nutritious choices. Serve her mashed fruits such as Gerber 3rd Foods Banana Strawberry and vegetables such as Gerber 3rd Foods Sweet Potatoes. Also offer whole-grain choices, dairy options like sliced cheese and yogurt, and chopped, lean meats or poultry.
  • Allow a little play. Mashed potatoes and applesauce may seem more appealing if she can finger paint with them first.
  • Let her experiment. If she wants to dip her cheese into her peaches, let her. What tastes good to her may not taste good to you!
  • You might try introducing a new food along with a familiar food, even mixing the two. For example, if your child likes bananas, introduce peaches by mixing them with bananas.
  • Keep at it. A food that’s refused today may be accepted tomorrow. It can take several tries before your child accepts a new food. Try not to only serve foods she seems to like. Offer new foods or familiar foods served in a new way, such as mashed banana served on a piece of waffle.
  • Be creative. Older babies like bright colors and fun shapes. Try serving your child foods such as Gerber Graduates Yogurt Melts snacks or Gerber Graduates Puffs.

Though mealtime may seem challenging right now, your persistence will pay off. You’ll be helping your child establish healthy eating habits. If your child doesn’t seem to like a new food, don’t be discouraged. Some experts say it may take a minimum of 10 exposures to a new food before he may decide that he likes it.

The baby puffs themselves are a great product. However, I will never make this particular purchase again. I paid over $13 for only three jars total. The product description made it sound like you get 9 total which would have been an okay deal. Instead they only send you 3 cans. So you pay over $4 per can with this order. I can get one can of theese at a very expensive market store for only just over $2 a can. Bad deal. Try buying somewhere else.

As for the product, these puffs are great for babies that are just starting to sit up and crawl and are just learning to chew. They dissolve almost immediately and all of the flavors taste and smell great. (I've sampled them myself haha.)

I've noticed quite a few people saying this is not a very good deal and tgatvthey paid 13 dollars for 3 canisters. I think that the only reason they would say that is because they are not familiar with Prime Pantry and the flat fee of 5.99 for delivery. In order to make it worth it, you have to fill up your whole box, or put in enough to justify it. If you look just under the product, it tells you this only fills 3% of your box. So buying this alone from prime pantry doesn't make any sense!

That being said, the price is actually about the same as buying them at the grocery store, but the benefit is that you can't get multi packs at the store (I've looked) and also this saves you the trip.

My son absolutely loves these. I started giving him this to get the hang of grabbing food between his thumb and index finger and within a week he was a pro. He gets this with every meal during the day...just a few to keep him satisfied.

My 20 month old daughter loves these puffs. They are one of the few finger foods that don't make a big mess, so I am happy to keep them in my car for her. She's never shown a preference for any of the flavors, and vice versa, has never shown a distaste for any of the flavors. I like that they are easy for her to eat, and because they dissolve quickly, I don't worry about her choking on them. Amazon has a great price for these, and subscribe and save makes them so convenient.

My son enjoys these puffs, but they tend to give him gas, so we stopped buying them. I also try to refrain from buying anything that is made with rice due to the potential arsenic content, but for a once-in-a-while snack, they're not bad.

Our little babies have enjoyed puffs a lot and so have some of the 'big babies' in our family. The puffs are convenient and a good way to satisfy a little one when they are hungry and it isn't convenient to give them other food. We kept this is a diaper bag for the most of the time as our little ones seems to expect puffs. I have noticed that a puff can stop a screaming fit on occasion, too. That makes them worth whatever they cost! The value pack is a good idea and that way you won't run out of puffs so fast.

These are a great starter for finger foods. My baby has a sensitive gag reflex and has gagged and even vomited when eating yogurt melts and Lil crunches corn snacks. But she has no issue with these melting puffs. This is a great price for 3 containers.

I've purchased all these flavors at the store so when I found them in a combo pack at the same price in Prime Pantry I scooped them up. My granddaughter loves these. They are a great alternative to things like cheese puffs. They melt quickly and easily in her mouth.
