Is this the perfect multi-tool? I don't think so, but it is pretty hard to beat the value. It's good quality--maybe not awe inspiring quality, but better than probably 80% of what you see, and for the money, you can't beat it. It's small, and not too, too bulky in the pocket. I'd be tempted to get one for myself, but I'm kind of a recovering knife/watch collecting addict. I was never serious about it as a hobby, but I found myself buying knives and watches many times just because I thought it was a nice model, only to end up in the drawer taking up space.
But I digress. If you can get a price near what I paid, I'd say give it a shot. It has not disappointed us in the least.
I also own a Gerber Dime multi-tool and for the money it is a much better product - everything about it is nice. Heck, the steel even looks better than whatever they used in this thing. My sense is that this is meant to be lower quality but the price difference isn't enough to justify the big difference in quality. I bought this for $10-12 and you can get a dime on Amazon for around $16.
Bottom line: does it work? Yes. Is the quality decent? Yes. Is it the best key chain multi-tool Gerber makes in the $10-20 range? No. Spend the $4-6 more and get a Gerber Dime instead.
My only complaint is when these products are built, please clean out the grit from the product and oil it up. A lot of the knives and multi-tools I have purchased recently need to be cleaned and oiled before they can really be used. That should be done during manufacturing, not by the consumer.
The tools themselves are: needle nose pliers, a reasonably sharp straight edge blade, a serated blade that looks more like a small saw brade, small and large flat blade screw drivers, a small philips screw driver, and a pair of tweezers. Of course the pliers also have a small nut wrench and a wire cutter.
All of that said, it's important to remember that this is a mini multi-tool. It weighs almost nothing, and it almost gets lost in your pocket. It is not a tool to work on your car with.
After all that praise, I don't want to leave you with the impression that this is a perfect tool. It is not. There is room for improvement.
The tweezers are worthless. Gerber should get rid of them and move the large flat blade screwdriver to that position.
Then, since the philips screwdriver in not really a true philips head, I would recommend that Gerber get rid of them too and replace them with a pair of scissors to match the quality of the rest of the tool.
Do these recommendations, and this mini multi will approach perfect in the world of pocket tools.
