Built like the Ultimate Knife, this non-serrated version has a fine edge from the tip of the blade to the top of the handle. Using the same high carbon, stainless steel drop point blade and texturized rubber handle this is equally tough and unmistakably Bear-inspired. Housed in a nylon and hard rubber military-grade sheath, a fire starter, a diamond knife sharpener and survival guide are all integrated. The lanyard cord contains an emergency whistle. The Ultimate Knife (both serrated and fine edge) is the pinnacle of Bear's signature line.

A signature product in Gerber's Bear Grylls line of survival gear, this rugged utility knife features a fixed, drop point, fine-edge blade made of high-carbon stainless steel. About Bear Grylls Survival Gear
Together with Bear Grylls, Gerber makes survival tools for everyone from scouts on their first overnighter to seasoned adventurers exploring the backcountry. For survival in the elements, Gerber created a line of the toughest, most innovative knives and tools available. With just your hands, your head, and your tools, you can account for everything needed to stay alive in the wild.
When Joseph R. Gerber described his young knife company, Gerber Legendary Blades, as the "birth of an enterprise that grew into big business," it was true, but it was an understatement for sure. What had started out in 1939 as a small batch of handmade cutlery sets given as holiday gifts had turned into thousands of retail accounts around the country. By 1960, Gerber had quickly become one of the most trusted, appreciated and collected names in knives.
After more than 70 years since its founding, Gerber continues to grow. Still grounded in the same principles that first guided Joseph R. Gerber's "enterprise," Gerber is a company dedicated to making knives and tools that combine high-quality materials and innovative designs that will stand up to a lifetime of use. The sleek, stainless steel sheath knives of the '50s and '60s (the Magnum Hunter) have given birth to today's lightweight, open-frame clip folders (the Remix). Gerber is, however, no longer just a knife company. Multi-tools, axes, handsaws, machetes, headlamps, flashlights, survival kits, digging implements--these are the newest directions that Gerber explores with the same standards of quality and design that inform their revered knife making.

I don't do an awful lot of "surviving" in the wilderness, but this knife has helped me with lots of tasks around the house.
Most recently I've been using it to shave the bark off of sticks that I'm using to make walking sticks. When I was using the serrated blade for that, I would sometimes end up gouging the wood a bit and having to shave more of it off than I would have liked. With the fine edge version of the knife, I haven't had any of the gouging issues that I did with the serrated one.
I think if I were to carry one with me, I would most likely carry the fine edge, simply because I would probably very rarely find myself in a situation where the serrated edge was necessary.
The quality of the overall product is very good...I've had zero issues with my serrated blade, and so far I've had no issues with the fine edge...and I don't anticipate having any at all.
I'd recommend the knife to anyone looking into getting into it.
I spend a lot of time in the outdoors and have a number of high dollar blades and I have to say that this knife was very impressive for the price. It came sharp out of the box, not even needing any touch up. It seems well built and feels really nice it the hand. The sharped spine works great with the ferro rod and even my son could quickly get sparks. I was impressed with the sharpening stone it came with and even used it to touch up one of my mora knives with great success.
The sheath is of really nice quality at this price point and seems like it should last a while. Probably the only negative I can possibly add is the lanyard on the whistle. It is too small to put your hand through but long enough that it gets in the way when using the knife. My son wound up putting it in the ferro rod and that works just fine. That's a small issue I know and that's really all I can say negative about the knife.
If you are debating whether to get this knife, then I say go ahead and make the purchase. You should not be disappointed!
Second it that the plastic part of the sheath starts to split along it's length. Mine is now held together with zip ties.
In it's defense the sharpener on the back of the sheath is holding up well, the knife itself is solid workmanship and hammer head on the handle hold up well after heavy use.
Although it is a good knife, the sheath and it's accessories is what really sold me on the product. It is really disappointing when you start to lose those accessories and end up with just a knife and it's holder.
