I bought this 8 years ago, after snapping the tip off a pocketknife trying to pry with it. I looked at other small prybars, but I generally like Gerber's tools. And since they stand by their products (I had a good experience the one time I needed to call customer service), I decided to give the Shard a try. Since then it has been with me literally every day (it's on my keyring). I've pulled nails out of boots, popped batteries out of compartments, opened beers, tightened screws, and tons of other things I've forgotten. I didn't really have any specific purpose in mind when I bought it, but I wind up using it for something at least twice a week.Just a quick tip: they sell keyrings made out of steel cable (the red ring in the picture). They are more flexible, durable and easier to grip than a standard ring. You might wanna grab one
Overall: This keychain tool is pretty useful. Its got a lot of function, but the bottle opener will likely get the most use. The material feels really sturdy. This tool is as slim as a standard key, but sticks out a bit with a little curve on the end for the flathead screwdriver. For less than $10 bucks, this is an awesome addition to my keychain. This IS NOT a Leatherman. Its NOT a swiss army knife. Don't expect it to be able to fit every screw in your house or use it to pry open a bank vault. It is what its advertised to be, all the functions work well (haven't tried wire stripper). Be realistic on what you will get out of this. I see a lot of reviews where people complain that it didn't fit some screw etc. If you are doing home repairs, use a real screwdriver set. If you want to have something on your keys to open beers, tighten an occasional screw or pry off a lid, this little guy will be your friend
Detailed Review Bottle opener: very stable, so much better than those free ones the you get from beer companies. No problems opening any bottles, even the annoying hard to open Modelo bottles. I don't foresee this opener breaking like all the little cheapies do. Its also slimmer than those little bottle openers, which is nice when you don't want a thick wad in your pocket.
Screwdrivers: Phillips head is the best one, its got a little length to it, so lets you work with the deeper screws nicely. The two flathead screwdrivers are decent, and I was able to turn a nice amount of screws with them. However, neither set will work with every screw you have. Think about your screwdriver set, you have about 6 sizes for each shape.
Pry Bar: pretty strong for how small it is. It'll do jobs bigger than you expect, like opening a can of paint with no problem. A little awkward to use at first because you may be worried it'll snap, but it surprised me.
Wire Stripper: Look okay, I haven't tried it, I can't imagine that it'll blow me away, and it looks like you would need to be very patient to use this feature.
Keychain hole: I thought it looked huge at first, but I will say that its pretty great. The size allows it to more freely on any keychain.
EXTRA USE: Its not listen, but with the two flat head screwdrivers being being on a curved end of the tool and being a little sharp, you can use it as a tiny fork. I would never try to eat a full meal with it, but if you are in a bind, it will definitely do the trick. Got a hot piece of meat on the grill that you don't want to burn yourself on and your grill tools aren't next to you? Yes you can. Warning: How clean is it in your pocket?
The Gerber Shard arrived in a very small box. Inside, the tool was wrapped in unsealed plastic. It was clean and obviously unused.
For years, I had a large and heavy (but loaded) Leatherman Juice multi-tool on my keychain. Recently I replaced it with a Spyderco Delica knife, which I found Id use more often, beside being far, far (far far!) lighter. But that left me without some essential tools. Luckily, I found this Gerber Shard, and purchased it hoping it would fill some of the gap.
It fits perfectly and conveniently on my keychain. There's no noticeable weight gain; it's a little longer than my keys, and it has a large lanyard hole so it will fit easily on any keyring. I do recommend a quick-release or detachable hookup of some sort because of the difficulty turning a screwdriver with a bunch of keys in hand! I use a small caribeaner as part of my keychain, and I can get this tool off in a snap.
The Shard is satisfyingly strong. I have used the phillips head to tighten a variety of things, including a loose door handle which I made so tight, it dug into the wood. The head showed no sign of stripping. The medium flat head performs similarly, without any wear showing on the tool. I have also used the mini pry-bar, and it performed perfectly without even a hint of stress on the tool itself.
The phillips head is not sharp enough to use an electronics screwdriver, but it is perfect for even somewhat small hardware screws. There are actually two flat-heads, though the caveat about electronics screws still applies. I have not tried the wire stripper, but I would most likely run my knife blade around the wire encasing before giving it a try.
I have no issue with ergonomics. I certainly would not use this for heavy-duty repairs or buildouts, but that's not what I bought it for. As a handy touch-up tool, I have not experienced any issues like strain or cramping. The Shard fits neatly between my thumb and forefinger, and because it's somewhat akin to a 90-degree angled hex wrench in how you apply it, it provides a good amount of leverage even when held with just those two fingers.
I highly recommend the Gerber Shard. It's a great tool that's met all my needs (so far), and at a great price too! I even bought a second one because I began using the original with my knife sharpening kit. It's that handy!
