    Product Description

Taking design cues from the original, the suspension-next is the evolution of a classic. Boasting an increased tool count of 15 in a lighter, thinner design, it fits comfortably Clipped in a pocket, or on a belt.  New to the suspension-next is a wire stripper, medium flathead driver, awl, file, and ruler but the benchmark  features remain: all outboard tools, all locking tools, and spring-loaded jaws.

Let’s face it, this is a cheaply priced multi-tool. Its flaws become more apparent with increased use. The tension holding the individual tools against the frame has diminished since I bought this three weeks ago, so the tools are falling out of the handle. As the photo hopefully illustrates, there is imprecise engineering here: the sharp chiseling corner/edge of the can/bottle opener is exposed & can easily nick skin or tear fabric during handling or just being in a pocket. If you need a cheap, near disposable multi-tool then this is OK, but for anything serious look elsewhere and spend the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight heavy-hitter, a good update of a proven design
Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2018
I had never liked Gerber's butterfly-opening multi-tools (MTs) and have always gravitated more towards their MP600 line. I have owned three different types of MP600 with the bladeless being used for EDC and the military-issue one being the most numerous (I have two but owned at least five at one time) so I never had a need to go to the Suspension line of MTs. When I saw the NXT revealed at the SHOT Show videos I knew I just had to give it a try and I'm glad I did.

The NXT is the lightest of the full-size MTs I own which offers me more tools than the Leatherman Wingman. It has good performing scissors, an adequate back-up combo blade, a combination can and bottle opener, and spring-loaded pliers among other tools. The pliers and wire cutter works fine (despite its anvil-type design where the cutters don't overlap) and the spring tension for the plier heads also allow for easier cutting and control. The combi bottle and can openers are also very effective and the scissors are quite efficient (and spring-loaded as well). The long-shanked Phillips head screwdriver has saved me more than once and the thicker flat heads are built for heavy-duty use. Last of all, the tools are fully locking in the NXT and inspire confidence despite medium-heavy use.

I have to knock it down a star because of the poor pocket clip design and rough features. Again, I am aware that for $25-29 I can't expect a Swiss Tool but the clip design was poorly executed and shoddily made on the NXT. The tool moves around in the pocket and the stamped Gerber logo is just poorly made. While I don't carry my MTs in-pocket (I always use a pouch and have a pocket knife anyway) a well-executed pocket clip like the Wingman's would give me that option. In terms of overall fit and finish, the tool is roughly cut/stamped and there are a number of grainy edges but not so much as to be sharp. The tools are also a bit hard to get out and require a bit of breaking in.

As mentioned, I have always carried my MTs in a pouch and the NXT is no exception. I found that the Maxpedition Entity series Small Pouch was perfect for the tool both aesthetically (the EDC and sleek low-profile look matches the NXT's design philosophy) and physically (snug fit and not too tight or loose).

Ultimately, the NXT is a good solid tool that punches above its weight class and PRICE POINT (let's not forget how affordable it is) but should not be considered as a heavy-use MT (in the Supertool 300, Powerlock, MP600 category). The NXT is now in my EDC rotation with the MP600 bladeless and Wingman and I am quite pleased with it. If you're looking to get acquainted with MTs without breaking the bank or paying close to $50 for one, then the NXT might be the one for you.

3 Month Use Update: used the NXT as my EDC for quite a while now and even took it up mountaineering. It's doing pretty well for EDC and basic campsite tasks (it lack a saw but we know that already). It's lightweight and sturdy construction is a solid plus for day to day use and 48 hour treks where not a lot of wood working is needed. I use the pliers, scissors, flathead most often.

1.0 out of 5 stars Defective product and a disappointment
Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2020
This is disappointing. Received the product with misaligned handles. It’s also very difficult to open with just one hand. Opening is not smooth and the tools will grind while I try to open it. The locking mechanism is also not smooth, and I need to push down the button extremely hard for it to unlock. VERY DANGEROUS WITH THE KNIFE. The locking mechanism is also defective, as it doesn’t go completely to lock as shown in the pictures. This is my first Gerber multitool product and it’s disappointing to say the least.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best EDC.
Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2018
This has been a great companion. Has everything you need and functional. The long pocket clip allows you to bring the minimal weight lower in the pocket. This feels really good. Im not convinced that it will hold up to extreme conditions or everyday use but it is a great EDC companion when you need any one of the tools it comes with.
Its a good deal for what you get. My suggestion is that you may need to put locktight on the screws as one of mine came loose. I put lock tight and now its solid.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Typical Gerber Product: Savings Not Worth the Compromises
Reviewed in Canada on January 19, 2021
Add me to the list of people with mis-alighted handles. It really comes down to what level of compromise you’re okay with. With this multi tool, the low cost means flimsy handles, tools that don’t move smoothly, torx tightening bolts that don’t allow you to adjust that tightness, plastic shavings trapped in the crevices, a locking mechanism that doesn’t work correctly unless your tool is repositioned at the far end of its extension range, a knife with (ugh) serration, and no case. Honestly, every Gerber product I’ve bought in the last couple of years has had flaws (the others were knives with brutal grind mistakes). If the $20 you save means you don’t get the ease and joy of using a leatherman sidekick or wingman, then that’s cool, but I feel like the knowledge that I didn’t cheap out for this Chinese-made halfway product. The good part is if you, like me, don’t like it, it won’t stress you out to leave it in your car 24/7 and carry a tool you can admire.
