This is a great primer and has the nice plates expected of an Osprey. The title is actually a little misleading since it actually covers the Holy Roman Empire as a whole, especially in the plates, so Italy, the Low Countries and Bohemia are covered alongside Germany. This is actually rather nice since the various parts of the Empire were so interconnected despite the modern political boundaries.

As the previous reviewer stated, this book pays little attention to the gear and fighting styles of the period. It instead focuses on the organization and composition of the German army, and then on the various major campaigns and battles of this period. This is valuable information nonetheless, and the quality of the plates and plate commentary make up for the otherwise lacking in the weapon-and-armor department.

I've enjoyed this book. As a fan of the medieval era i found this pretty interesting for my experience of this book and its intriguing knowledge of medieval Germany from 1000 to 1300 AD. Also I am a fan of Graham Turner's artwork alongside GA Embleton and especially the late Angus McBride. Bottom line this is a nice book for me as a medieval fan from Osprey Publishing.

good condition, came reasonable fast, no hassle at all. i am using it to help me paint up a new wargaming army and although there are only a few pics that really help me (only one or two of the pikemen that all the armies seemed to use) it is still a big help.

I found this to be a decent summary and intro to the topic. I would like to have seen a MUCH more extensive Bibliography. The color plates were nice.

This is a reference book on the armies of the German Medieval Armies. The subject of this book cover the armies from the time of Emperor Otto III (983 C.E. [Common Era] through 1002 C.E.) until the time of Emperor Otto IV (1198 C.E. through 1215 C.E.) This period of time includes the last part of the reign of the Saxon Dynasty, the entire reign of the House of Franconia (including the famous individual reign of Emperor Henry IV [1056-1106] and the ) and the entire reign of the House of Hohenstaufen.
The period of time covered by this book is a very important time for the history of Germany. Following the death of the Hohenstaufen Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in 1250 C.E. and the resultant downfall of the Hohenstaufen Dynasty, there followed a period of civil war and confusion in Germany that is now called "the Interregnum." The major feature of the Interregnum was the rise of the nobles and the establishment of a series of small princeling states. Indeed, during this period of time, Germany was reduced to nothing more than a series of small kingdoms and princeling states. This was to be the primary condition of Germany for another 700 years. To the chagrin of generations of German nationalists, Germany would not emerge as a modern unified state until the Bismarckian Era of 1848 C.E. through 1871 C.E.

Excellent Illustrations for Wargamers.

For the person with an interest in military history the osprey series of books are excellent. Illustrations are always of a high standard. The medieval period in Germany was violent even for the times and this book gives a small insight into it. Books are very good for the wargames enthusiat.

I love the Osprey series and this one is full of interest mostly because my knowledge of the Holy Roman Empire is so limited.
