Judging from his accomplishments--all realized by age 34--you'd assume Parker Schaffel has something to say. And he does. But his sensory storytelling is the book's real strength; we root for him because of his dedication to each task. The author is a man's man, and it shows. But even those who know little about F-16s, football or heavy metal will appreciate his engaging stories and scrappy mentality.
- BlueInk Review
Parker Schaffel's heartfelt, captivating memoir Get After It recalls an unimaginable eight-year-long emotional roller coaster in pursuit of an officer's position in the air force. It could have broken his spirit, but it ultimately led to victory and a life of meaning and purpose. Honest and forthright in sharing both triumphs and defeats, the book makes the best of each turn of events. It is enlivened by colorful and often humorous descriptions of people and places. Included photographs add to the imagery. Get After It is a memoir that eloquently conveys the notion that single-minded pursuit of a goal is worthwhile, even when sacrifices are necessary to achieve it.

From the Back Cover
Parker Schaffel hasn't done everything, but by 34 years of age, he certainly had done a lot: He served in the US Navy as an intelligence officer, jumped out of planes more than 50 times, ran a successful financial planning practice, released multiple albums from his solo music project, served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain, and Jordan, and worked for the CIA and State Department. During those experiences, he kept a journal. Years later, those journal entries morphed into this book: seven stories of inspiration, motivation, and deep-seated energy of finding inner strength when it mattered most...and getting after it.
This book is a great collection of inspirational stories to help you find the motivation to "get after it." Whether you're looking for some motivation in your own life or are simply interested in enjoying the unique experiences of someone you've never met you should check it out. The summaries at the end of each chapter are great checkpoints for relating the author's experiences to your own.
Some of these stories I already knew, some of them I didn't. But all of them reminded me what a unique and wonderful person Parker is! By the time I got to the last page, I was smiling like a dummy, proud of my friend for all he has accomplished! And the stories got some ideas churning about my own views on my life and career, for which I am grateful. Congratulations, P!
The book provides seven distinct but interrelated stories of adversities Parker experienced at given points in his life, how he got after it to overcome these adversities, and lessons learned for future endeavors. It's obvious from reading the book that Parker took copious notes in his daily journal and delivers quite a thorough account of each school/work/life experience he is describing. This is a very uplifting book that provides the reader with a lot of food for thought
Outstanding chronology of setting objectives, cultivating important contacts, and adjusting goals based on setbacks and circumstances. While the phrase "never give up" is overused and too often ignored, this is a story of ultimate achievement despite setbacks, hard lessons, and the meaning of truth telling. The author's vast life experiences for a person of such a young age is remarkable. This book should be required reading for other young people who have ambitious goals but have been discouraged by failure.
This is a really excellent book for anybody in search of that little bit of internal motivation to succeed in life. The author does a fantastic job of tying the universal and the singular together by using his own personal experiences to show common challenges all of us face and how we can overcome them. The author's warm, welcome prose made the book a breeze to read, and the poignant, emotional stories were a fantastic mix of heartwarming, sad, and triumphant. A must read.

This book has the best words. Believe me. People come to me and they tell me they have great words, they haven't read this book! Mr. Schaffel uses some great bigly words to paint a beautiful mind picture, and there are even pictures in the book which is even better. I love pictures. This is a tremendous work, truly tremendous. 5 out of 10 stars for sure!
