Let me start off by saying that I do not consider myself a fan of either of the lead comics. As far as Will Ferrell goes I have never considered him to be funny and never understood why he was so famous and how so many people think he is laugh out loud funny, I just don't get it. I attempted to watch "Step brothers" and "Talladega Nights" and couldn't get through them because I thought they were so horribly unfunny; and I thought his cameo at the end of "Wedding Crashers" sealed its fate as yet another horribly unfunny movie. The only movie of his I recall completing is " The Campaign (2012) " and that is mostly because I was on a 16-hour flight to the Philippines and the hand full of sleeping pills I took failed me. Now as far as Kevin Hart goes, I think he is overrated and I would pick Chris Tucker as a standup comic OR actor over him any day of the week. I was dissapointed that I spent money to see "The Wedding Ringer" in theater as it was lackluster at best and Mr. Hart does better in supporting roles (ie. " The Five-Year Engagement ") rather than lead roles in my opinion.

Anyhoo, I say all this only to prove when I rented "Get hard" for $3.99, I had no predisposition and no allegiance to either leads and I also knew nothing of the supporting cast either (I was pleasantly surprised to see Paul Ben-Victor a bad guy in the movie, he did in "Houseguest" as well, one of my childhood faves). I saw the trailer for "Get Hard" when I saw "The Wedding Ringer" and thought that it looked promising; the premise is James King (Ferrell) hiring Darnell (Hart) because he's black so statistically he "knows" Darnell has been to prison and can teach him how to survive his prison sentence. I admit that I almost gave up on the movie in the beginning because "Get Hard" starts so slowly so I was already thinking "Why do people think Ferrell is funny?!?" within the first five minutes. However, I stuck with it and was glad I did. Once the initial ten or so minutes were over, the movie picked up its pace and was really enjoyable. I laughed out loud throughout the movie and even laughed hard enough to cry a couple of times. The movie is filled with cussing and dirty jokes, which didn't bother me any. The character Ferrell plays, James King, is so 'square' his attempts at cussing are hilarious and are the source of many hilarious one-liners throughout the film. Rapper T.I. is good and believable as Russell, cousin of Darnell and a "true" thug that has in fact been to prison; the interaction between him, his fellow gang members, and James teaching them how to "invest" their cocaine in order to yield a multi-million dollar profit on the stock market is entertaining as well. I wouldn't have minded seeing more of Shonda (Perry) I guess that little bit at the end was good enough, you'll have to watch the movie to figure out who she is and how she fits in. I don't want to spoil the movie but I deduct one star due to the ending, it could've been fleshed out more, especially concerning James' life/career in the end. I also did not care for Makayla (Neal), Darnell's daughter, I don't know how old she is in real life but she looks so young in the face but her dialog is that of a tween or teenager. I think that role could've been casted better, but it's a minor flaw that probably wouldn't bug other people.

For anyone interested: Before my rental expired, I watched it again the following day but with my dad and his boyfriend. My dad found the prison sex and gay jokes to be offensive and felt they could've been omitted altogether. His boyfriend wasn't offended but thought the movie was just okay with a couple funny parts here and there. So take that for what it's worth. Overall, if you're a fan of either of the comics or enjoy off-color humor, you may want to check this out, otherwise this isn't for you.

Personally I think this movie is underrated. Will Ferrel plays the perfect one percent male who is out of touch with the rest of the world and reacts to Kevin Harts character hysterically. Although the story line is out there; these two actors play off each other great. If you want a good laugh watch this movie.
