highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for insight into any kind of breakup or rejection experience. It makes you look at yourself in a deep way, and it offers some valuable insights into the nature of pain and how to crawl out of it into a place of greater self-awareness, self-acceptance and self-confidence.
This book is the journey of what it feels like to lose a best friend. It is a story of incredible pain: a pain that we are not supposed to feel, a pain that makes us feel so alone, a pain that we are not supposed to talk about, a pain that isn’t understood because it isn’t usually addressed.
The author of this book is a psychologist. She therefore has the tools to do deep self-reflection. She has the tools to draw from her own experiences and bring to awareness how difficult this experience is, but also how much we can learn from it. She takes us on her adventure to self-discovery.
According to psychologist Carl Rogers, “What is most personal is most universal.” The author’s personal story is universal. Friendships can bring us so much joy and so much pain. By talking about the pain and her path to recovery, the author brings forth the universal: friendships breakups are extremely painful, and normal, and by talking about them, we can heal.
I was inspired with how she dealt with her personal transformation and how she took bad situations and turned them around. She has a great sense of humor as well.
I am really glad that I took the time to read this and wasn’t stuck on the fact that I thought it was for women. This is for guys as well! I am getting my friend who is a female a copy as well.
If you want to read a book that’s filled with a great blueprint of when something that seems too devastating happens to you and how you can deal with it and not just get down and depressed, I highly recommend this book. It gives you a way to take a negative situation and turn it into a positive one.
I was surprised at how quickly this story got rolling and how enchanted I was with it. The writing is a real page turner and the author goes into incredible personal detail about her family and her feelings. And within a few pages I learned that her story is my story, it's everyone's story. Its a story of loss. And the feelings that go along with loss. And the words that some of us (men) will never talk about. By voicing her journey, she speaks for many that perhaps never speak for themselves.
And yet amazingly, at the same time, the book is downright funny. There are hilarious moments of self doubt and stories that I'm sure we all have but are scared to let out into the public.
Although the title makes me feel like the book is geared towards women, the points in it are simply those that every human experiences.
Go on this journey with Sharon. You wont regret it.
