Get Money is so great for a few key reasons:
1) Kristin brings in personal anecdotes so you don’t feel lectured to. With so many personal finance books it feels like you’re being nagged at. Not here.
2) The book makes it easy to follow her advice. Worksheets are sprinkled through the book so it is interactive. Some books tell you good stuff, then you forget it fast. With Get Money, you’re getting your finances in order as you read the book, so you actually get stuff done. This means the book actually works unlike a few other personal finance books I’ve read.
3) The advice is top notch even if you aren’t on a strict budget. Kristin has come up with some great rules like the 10/10 rule to help you stop making expensive impulse purchases. She also provides great advice to maximize your retirement savings and lower credit card and cable bills. Even if you’re not financially hurting, these tips can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars per year which means an extra vacation, more retirement savings, or really whatever you want.
So yeah. Get Money is easy to understand, fun to read, and packed with good advice. You should get it.
It's less helpful if you're older and handling mortgages, health care and insurance issues, and/or retirement.
Overall, 4 stars!
Also because I've been using YouNeedABudget.com for over two years, I've worked out many of the recommendations given in this book. YNAB has taught me how to budget and plan for my expenses. But I read books like this to learn even more about how I should mange my money.
I personally found Erin Lowry's "Broke Millennial" book to be far more accessible so people of all levels can feel empowered to take control of their personal finances.
However, if you need to gamify personal finance - this book may be of more use to you.
