I do not understand all the rave reviews for this book. It is a blatant self-promotion tool that doesn't offer a shred of practical management advice. The reader gets fantastic advice such as "Golf is good," "Networking is good," "What's important to you at the lower levels is not not important to me," followed by story after story of his amazing accomplishments. Mr Fuchs needs to reread rule #16 in his appendix B: "Self-promotion embarrasses those who do it. If you are a true success, people will know. You don't have to tell them." Ironic, isn't it?

Get off the Bench is required reading for all professionals and business people. It reminded me of my strengths, and provided me new relationship building techniques to use. I purchased a copy for my son, a freshman college student. In a young person's world dominated by impersonal tweeting and texting, Mr. Fuchs' advice will help him learn tried and true gems of relationship building. This book will not only help you at work, but also help you build and maintain relationships in life.

This book is an enjoyable, educational read. Sid's networking guidance and recommendations are not cookie-cutter prescriptions for everyone, but his personal anecdotes and experience help you see the potential in relationship building, social networking and general community interaction skills. The author is a prototypical example of an expressive personality and their attributes, perspectives and aspirations. Analytical, amiable, driver and other expressive personality types will get a lot out of Sid's treatment of networking topics. It is a great case study in communications among diverse individuals with differing motivations, comforts and discomforts.

The one shortcoming that kept me from a 5 star rating was that the book was 90% autobiographical. Some additional third person pronouns and objective studies, data and objective opinions would have strengthened the central themes.

Get off the Bench was recommended to me by my professor in an MBA Leadership class. A thought-provoking and insightful book about building relationships, but more importantly about advancing your career and tackling the executive levels of leadership through your network. I have reread Mr. Fuchs 20 Lessons Learned multiple times and have consistently benefited from his advice in my career. A must read for any MBA or business student!

First off, I can't wait to put what I learned in this book to use. A great and quick read. Sid masterfully details the benefits of being "plugged in" to your network. The book is a fast-paced read with great summaries and tips. The book went well beyond just basic networking. It demonstrated practical reasons why inter-personal relationships are important. It brought Dale Carnegie type social and communication skills into the modern world, and showed you how to use Franklin Covey type leadership and relationship building in everyday business and personal relationships. Sid writes in straight-forward language describing the behind-the-scenes keys to success in anything you do - building relationships. Even if you never plan to network, the principles in this book are timeless: take a genuine interest in people, remain humble, give more than you receive, etc. Just employing these techniques with the people you currently know and work with will undoubtedly improve those relationships, and who knows where those will go once you start to apply what you learn in this book. The real-world application of this book is what makes learning and applying these principles easy to understand and actually do.

It is a great motivator to finally get involved in networking and start deliberately charting my own course.

I spend a lot of time mentoring and have struggled to find ways to effectively convey how critical networking is. Much of my success is attributable to the relationships I have built. Still, getting the message across isn't easy. Thankfully, the author has put together a concise, actionable, and suprisingly engaging book that nails these issues. Fuchs, successful in his own right, has practiced what he preaches and has managed to bottle a lot of experience remarkably well. I've sent copies off to all those I coach with a note saying, "See,didn't I tell you this was important??"

This is a great resource both for those trying to get ahead and those helping others.
