With energy and enthusiasm, Reggie McNeal calls believers to dismount, get down and dirty, and live a life that makes a difference. He shows readers how to recalibrate their spiritual efforts to move from church-centric service to greater community engagement in order to do their essential part in creating a world worth living in. McNeal also shows readers that helping others actually helps the one doing the service just as much as the one being served. In fact, serving is the very best way to learn about yourself and grow spiritually.
Anyone who longs to have the impact on the world that Jesus did will love this provocative and inspirational message.

From the Back Cover
In one of his most famous parables, Jesus points us to a man who gets down off his donkey and helps someone in dire need. Now, with energy and enthusiasm, Reggie McNeal calls you to dismount, get messy, and live a life that makes a real difference. He reveals two mutually reinforcing truths: First, helping others is often the best path for our own personal development. And second, as you become more the person you were designed to be, you increase your capacity to serve others. It all starts with a decision to get off your donkey--today!
"A challenge for all Christians to lead their lives like Jesus--to love and serve others. What a fabulous message! What a wonderful book!"--Ken Blanchard, coauthor, The One Minute Manager and Lead Like Jesus
"In this inspiring book, we have biblically based courses of action and illustrations that are invaluable for those who want to live out Jesus's imperative to love our neighbors as ourselves."--Tony Campolo, emeritus professor of sociology, Eastern University
"Reggie's new book vacillates from very good to fabulously good. In fact, this book is so good I don't want to talk about it here. Read it, and then we'll talk."--Leonard Sweet, bestselling author; professor, Drew University and George Fox University; chief contributor to www.sermons.com
"If you've ever wondered what God wants you to do with your life, Reggie McNeal has written a book that will show you exactly how and where to get started."--Larry Osborne, author and pastor, North Coast Church, Vista, California
"McNeal brilliantly examines one of the elements central to well-being: well-doing. His book will change how you think about the role of religion and spirituality in leading a thriving (and well-doing) life."--James K. Harter, chief scientist, The Gallup Organization; New York Times bestselling author
"For everyone who wants to make a difference . . . this is a must-read."--Eric Cooper, president and CEO, San Antonio Food Bank
Reggie McNeal enjoys helping people enjoy more intentional lives. He is a bestselling author, teacher, and popular speaker for groups engaged in community service, including the US Military, businesses such as The Gallup Organization, and faith-based groups and other not-for-profit organizations such as the Salvation Army. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

In this book, Reggie lets his humor come through (notably in the telling of the story behind the book's title). Many practical ways to take action. If there is one message in this book, it is that you must take action and he is tremendously effective in getting you to do so. He challenges the reader to literally and metaphorically get of one's donkey.
I happened to read it when I was at a crossroads of how, or if, to get more engaged in working for the coming of the Kingdom and it really got me moving.
Nearly everyone knows the story from Luke chapter 10 concerning the priest and Levite who passed by the traveller who had been robbed, and the Samaritan with the donkey who stopped to help, but what does the story have to say to the church today? The author notes firstly that the Samaritan had to inconvenience himself, getting down to become engaged with the plight of the robbery victim, and secondly that Jesus instructed us to go and do likewise; not just to agree with the sentiment, but to actually follow the example.
The book goes on to make a number of pertinent observations, including:
* Effective helping often requires partnering with others, just as the Samaritan partnered with the innkeeper
* Doing good to others is good for you, by increasing your self-awareness, improving your connection with people, and helping you become all that God made you to be
* Judgmentalism, prejudice, busyness, distraction, fear, indifference and apathy keep us from helping people that we should help
* When we are too embarrassed to mention Jesus when we are serving people, people are left with a caricature of Jesus painted by some religious nut or poor church experiences or the media
* You serve others most effectively when you find a way of serving that aligns with your passion, talent, personality, and experiences
I did not find any particularly new or startling insights in the book, but the author does provide a short, timely and important reminder of a key aspect of the Christian faith that many seem to have cast aside in a quest for political ascendancy or by withdrawing in reaction to a range of perceived threats to Christianity in the social environment.
I bought an inventory of this book and have been giving them away to those seeking encouragement about their life.
