Product description
Get Ready CD London Records, 8573896212, 2001, 10 Track
Amazon.com
New Order is a member of an elite group of long-standing bands whose sound remains innovative, despite a nearly unchanged musical direction. No one touches Peter Hook's warm, startlingly melodic basslines or Bernard Sumner's slightly unsure but instantly recognizable singing. Get Ready is a classic New Order album with a few twists. Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan (who no doubt hero-worshipped the band, like most angst-ridden alterna-youth of his generation) is invited for a guest appearance on "Turn My Way," and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie aids New Order in producing the dirty, Stones-ripping tune "Rock the Shack," an imitation of Scream's 1994 single, "Rocks." Fans might be taken aback by the disc's occasional sophomoric lyrics, but given the band's standard for poetic prowess, it may be safe to assume that lyrics like "Here comes love/it's like honey/you can't buy/it with money" are tongue-in-cheek. The CD is bookended with its best songs: "Crystal" is one of their finest singles ever, layered with synthesized rhythm tracks and a beautiful interplay between Sumner and a backing female vocal, and "Run Wild" is a tastefully lush ballad that summons those painful and glorious emotions that somehow are unique to the band's music. Few rock groups that equally utilize keyboards and guitars have survived the post-Nirvana shakeout, but Get Ready is further testimony that while trends and musical movements come and go, New Order will always matter. --Beth Massa

All factors came together simultaneously for me to purchase this. Cable TV was running the music video for "CRYSTAL" (most definitely worth catching! I won't say further...no spoilers!), I read a readers' comment in the October 2016 issue of British "Q" music magazine that "GET READY' should have been included in a list of NEW ORDER'S BEST CDs/LPs & "60 MILES AN HOUR" was played on one of my Pandora radio stations (another standout on this Fantastic release!)
While all the tracks are great, "GET READY" is a pretty cohesive sound, which isn't easy for any band who merges rock with dance to achieve (& some merge even more sub-categories of each genre). So, Bernard Sumner & NEW ORDER deserve cudo's for nailing that!! The opener, "CRYSTAL" is probably the only song that I've ever heard (& I've head a Lot of 'em!!) which I can hit repeat over & over & over, etc.....IT IS THAT GREAT!!
I already couldn't resist "GET READY" and, being a HUGE Bobby Gillespie/Primal Scream Fan, if there had been any doubt at all (which there wasn't) the dual vocal with him accompanying Bernard Sumner on "ROCK THE SHACK" would have disspelled that instantly!! " GET READY" should either already be in your collection or be the next one added!!
Here are the highlights (in my opinion):
"60 Miles An Hour" is absolutely addictive. As its title suggests, this is a song to put the top down to and go for a cruise down the highway.
"Rock The Shack" is down 'n' dirty Stones-like riffing.
To my ears, "Close Range" is the masterpiece of the album. Beginning with an insistent synth line, it slowly and inexorably builds to a mighty climax. What is most exciting about this cut (and all of the tracks in general) is Peter Hook's bass. Imagine the high-end melodicism of Rush's Geddy Lee combined with the rock-solid underpinning of The Who's John Entwhistle, and you have a glimmer of the beauty of Hooksy's work on this cd. When he takes the lead on "Close Range", it's enough to bring tears to your eyes. It fades out during his solo, and I can't help but wonder what heights he eventually reached.
Lest you think this is all bass pyrotechnics, let me praise the amazing drum riffs of Stephen Morris, the warm and assured vocals of Bernard Sumner, and the near-perfect synth backing of Gillian Gilbert. Bernie's guitar has not sounded this aggressive in years.
What a great piece of work.
In my view, this is far more creative and appealing than Substance or their other more poppy, dancy stuff. Still, as I write this, I'm thinking that Get Ready has its poppy dancy side as well. Perhaps more "unusual" and unexpected sonic changes is a better way to put it; I've always thought New Order was fairly predictable.
So buy it. I've recommended this CD to more people than I have in a while -- up there creatively with The Blue Nile's Walk Across the Rooftops, Stone Roses' debut CD, and the Verve's Urban Hymns.
