I highly recommend this book!!!!
Author: Jamy Whitaker
Publisher: WestBow Press
"God uniquely designed each of us for what He has called us to do. He planned every day of your life to lead you to your calling. He intends for us to use every gift, every talent and every life experience, good and bad, for His purpose and His glory," Jamy Whitaker writes in her book, "Get REAL - Stop Hiding Behind the Mask."
At one hundred and eleven pages, this small paperback book is authored by a wife and mother of five from Indiana who tries earnestly to get readers to unveil their true self and focus on God. Targeted mainly toward Christian women, the book uses many Bible verses from the NKJV, NIV and The Message versions.
Separating into three parts, Whitaker discusses our identity, insecurities and perspective covered in twelve chapters to help us get real and remove our outward masks that we hide behind when dealing with others. At the end of the book are Bible study questions chapter by chapter for personal or group use and resource notes.
In the first section, we are called to remember that our identity in Christ comes before activity and we need to see ourselves as God sees us. With nine identities discussed, we are forgiven, set free, accepted, holy, made-new, loved, close, confident and victorious in our relationship to God, which can be reflected to others if He is the center of our lives.
Listing five Biblical attributes of God, He is named in Scripture as Elohim (Creator), Adonai (Sovereign God), El Shaddai (God Almighty) and El Olam (Eternal God). We too have our own names given by Him that makes us who we are individually.
With the analogy of a picture frame having different sizes, shapes and designs, God allows us do-overs when we falter. Developing insecurities like a book cover that is only seen from the outside, God does not call the equipped but He equips the called.
By mentioning a plethora of Biblical characters such as Abraham, Moses, Mary, and Peter, God stretches and makes us take needed risks to show our true selves. Although our circumstances, what others think of us, and distractions can alter our perspectives, we need to be content and seek God's will first.
With the many allegories to her family, husband and household tasks along with inanimate objects and Bible verses, the writer correlates that we need to take our focus off earthly issues and place them on eternal ones to rid ourselves of our worn-out masks.
This book was furnished by the author for review purposes.
The book is broken down into 3 parts: Identity, Insecurities and Perspective, covering the foundation of why we wear masks, and how we can move forward without them. Discussing our Identity, Ms Whitaker chooses 9 adjectives - with Scriptural "back up" - that lay the groundwork of who we are as a saved individual. Elaborating on characteristics such as "set free", "accepted", "made new" and "victorious", she goes on to explain how incorporating this knowledge into our lives can begin to give us the courage to peel away our masks. Reassuringly, she reminds us that "The issue with most people today is not that they do not love God. It is that they cannot begin to imagine how much He loves all of them." P.29
"It is so easy to stand still or go back to what is familiar. However, we will never get to our "promised land" if we do not take that step of faith. God has big things in store for each one of us. However, those blessings will not be realized if we never get moving to our "promised land". (p.95)
The take-away? This is an easily-read book with lots of meat to chew on...and a call to action that none of us have the luxury to ignore.
