In Get Trump: The Threat to Civil Liberties, Due Process, and Our Constitutional Rule of Law, Alan Dershowitz—#1 New York Times bestselling author and one of America’s most respected legal scholars—analyses the unremitting efforts by political opponents of Donald Trump to “get” him—to stop him from running in 2024—at any cost.

Alan Dershowitz has been called “one of the most prominent and consistent defenders of civil liberties in America” by
Politico and “the nation’s most peripatetic civil liberties lawyer and one of its most distinguished defenders of individual rights” by Newsweek.

Get Trump makes clear that unconstitutional efforts to stop Trump from retaking the presidency challenge the very foundations of our liberty: due process, right to counsel, and free speech. Those who justify these dangerous departures from the rule of law argue that the threat posed by a second Trump presidency is “different” and “immediate,” while the departures from constitutional norms are longer term and more abstract.

Dershowitz explains that defenders of Trump’s constitutional rights—even those like him who oppose Trump politically—are sought to be silenced; their free speech rights attacked, their integrity questioned, and their careers threatened. Much of the media substitutes advocacy against Trump for objective reporting, while many in academia petition and propagandize against rights they previously valued—all in the interest of getting Trump.

The essence of justice is that it must be equally applicable to all, Dershowitz notes. No one is above the law but digging to find crimes in order to influence an election does not constitute the equal application of the law. In order to assure equal application in comparable situations, he proposes two criteria for indicting a likely candidate of the opposing party: the Richard Nixon standard and the Hillary Clinton standard—and most recently, the Joe Biden standard.

Get Trump warns that regardless of whether this anti-democratic effort to stop Trump from running succeeds or fails, it is likely to create dangerous precedents that will lie around like loaded weapons ready to be deployed against other controversial candidates, officials, or citizens about whom it can be argued that the danger they pose “is different.”

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The fearless, peerless Alan Dershowitz.”
—Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, late Chief Rabbi of Great Britain

“Anyone interested in the true merits of criminal law and very fine writing
must read Alan Dershowitz’s book.”
—Truman Capote

“Alan Dershowitz speaks with great passion and personal courage.”
—Elie Wiesel

“Astonishingly brilliant courtroom presence [and] a subtle and compelling theorist
of civil liberties.”
—Henry Louis Gates

“Alan Dershowitz powerfully advocates the fundamental precept that civil liberties and constitutional rights must be protected for all individuals and groups, even those whose beliefs we reject and condemn, lest we endanger freedoms for everyone. He persuasively champions liberalism as promoting this core but embattled tenet.”
—Nadine Strossen, former president of the National ACLU; professor at New York Law School

“Alan Dershowitz's commitment to free speech, fundamental fairness, and an open culture of freedom of expression has made him the scourge of both censors and double standards. He understands deeply that those who seek to silence others, either through governmental acts or a revival of McCarthy-era blacklists, are removing the protections of liberty on which all of us depend for our future freedom.”
—Alan Charles Kors, Henry Charles Lea Professor Emeritus of History, University of Pennsylvania

“Love him or hate him, Dershowitz has lived a life that matters, hugely and enduringly. He is a man in full at a time when most of us aspire
to be little more than a presence on Twitter.”
New York Times Book Review

“An intellectual heavyweight.”
The Economist

“Loud, provocative, brilliant, and principled….”
—Politico

Wise Words for Those on the Right and Left
Given what is currently going on between the Justice Department, Trump, the media, and his political friends and adversaries, this smart book by Dershowitz will likely become another bestseller.I am reminded of a short scene in Robert Bolt's play, A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS . . .“William Roper: “So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law!”Sir Thomas More: “Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?”William Roper: “Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!”Sir Thomas More: “Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down, and you're just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!”

Every American must read this book. As a refugee from a communist totalitarian country, I see my fellow American brothers and sisters taking liberty for granted. I highly recommend this book; the author explains the foundational legal principles that have been protecting Americans' freedom and rights and why our legal system are in danger, in an easy-to-understand way. I don't want to relive communism. This not about our generation only, it's about our future generations to come.

I would recommend this for reading. It just may enlighten people on just how messed up our judicial system is and how it has been weaponized. Remember, if they can do this to Trump, what would they do to the average citizen in the same situation.

The author is a retired professor at Harvard Law School, a lifelong Democrat who never has voted for Trump but is offended, even outraged, by the singling out of Donald Trump for prosecution (or even persecution). Latisha James, the New York State Attorney General, ran for election on the promise that she would "get Trump", which was the basis for this book title. So, she hand-picked an anti-Trump judge who decided on his own (no jury and no expert to independently do an appraisal) that Trump had overvalued his property for a more favorable bank loan rate and fined him half a billion dollars, even though the banks were entirely happy with Trump's valuation; it was a "crime" with no victim. Even his sons, who had played no part in the loan process, were fined several million dollars. Alvin Bragg, a local DA who also campaigned on getting Trump, resurrected a non-disclosure case, a misdemeanor at most, called it a felony because he said it affected the 2016 election, and elevated it to a federal level felony, even though it this was not the proper venue for trying federal cases. He hand-picked a conflicted judge whose family was benefitting financially from this case and it would be tried in Manhattan, where the jury was 90 percent Democrats. The book was written before the verdict came out and resulted in Trump being labeled a felon, defamation that was calculated to cost Trump votes in the upcoming presidential election. This was felt to be the weakest of the 4 lawsuits filed against him. The two other lawsuits, in Florida and Georgia, were also described in some detail. It makes for interesting reading and will open the eyes of readers whose only news sources are CNN, MSNBC, NPR, Washington Post and even the NYT.

I've been a lifelong fan of Alan Dershowitz and generally agree with him. I bought this book expecting to agree with his point of view and to get some understanding of each of the cases being brought against Trump. It's an excellent defense of civil liberties and free speech, but the book only discusses the classified documents case in detail. Many others are not even mentioned - they may have been brought after the book was finished.

It's an excellent book - if you are already a proponent of civil liberties, you might not learn that much. If you are unsure what you think about all this, I highly recommend this book.

Alan Dershowitz and I couldn't be further apart politically, but we both place the Constitution and rule of law above partisan politics. Although he goes a little off topic a time or two, and it is apparent he lacks "technical knowledge" on a couple of things, Dershowitz aptly explores the hidden dangers of carving out "exceptions" to the Constitution or rule of law when it suits a political agenda, pointing out past trespasses including Lincoln suspending Habeas Corpus, FDR putting Japanese-Americans in internment (e.g. prison) camps, and others. Although I think he's flat out wrong on several points, he is absolutely right on far more points. One of the things he talks about is how he, a life long far left democrat, has himself experienced what so many others on the opposite end of the spectrum have -- cancellation, threats, and intimidation for daring to support the "wrong guy." I would have liked to see him link the premise of his book, which is "Get Trump" by any means regardless of Constitutionality or legality, to the Saul Alinsky principle of the ends justifying the means. Although he does not, this book adequately and in simple, plain language (you don't need to be a lawyer or political scientist to understand) the danger of where this "Get Trump" obsession is leading our nation. Indeed Dershowitz wrote Get Trump so anyone can understand it and take heed of the warning he presents. All, regardless of your political persuasion, should read this book. This book is powerful and hence, the five star rating I give it.

Alan Dershowitz writes this book in a very easy to read presentation. He rises above partisan politics in a very convincing matter manner. He strays at times from the actual target of the book, which is to get Trump, but his points are well-made, have a great historical reflection. He makes the reader examine his own prejudices by reflecting on the principles of our nation’s Constitution.

The crux of the book is that everyone deserves due process under the law. The substance of the book is shallow, and doesn’t explore any concepts in depth. The author has an underlying pattern of repeating a few concepts over and over again. I bought the book in order to be wowed, but it fell short.
