I really loved Addison and Elijah and it was fun reading about a story set in Charleston, a city I’m somewhat familiar with, having grown up in South Carolina. It gave me all the feels I want out of a contemporary romance. High and lows, but wrapped up in a nice bow at the end. I’ve already added book two (Naomi’s story) to my TBR!
Addison Potts hasn't been back in her hometown of Charleston for years. She's been living in NYC, but when her grandmother passes away and leaves everything to Addison, she returns to tie up all the loose ends. She has no intention of staying. Her extended family situation isn't good, thanks to her absentee mother's prior misdeeds. But, since she enjoys stirring the pot, she shows up uninvited to her cousin Naomi's wedding. A wedding that never happens after all. She has no idea what's coming for her, but when she lays eyes on the groom, she falls head over heels. But he needs a friend after being jilted at the alter. So that's what she'll be.
Captain Elijah Montgomery DuPont is the epitome of southern class and elegance in a man. His manners are pristine. His family is above reproach. His father has been the mayor of Charleston for a long time, and Elijah is poised to take his father's place with this next election. So, he takes the expected steps to marry well, to family friend Naomi, who is also from a respected local family. When she leaves him at the altar, he's shocked. So shocked, that when he walks out of the church to find Addison in her old clunker of a car, offering to help him get away quickly, he takes her up on it. Even though he's never seen her before in his life. There are so many demands on Elijah's time and attention, and he lives so much in the public eye, that he's not sure he can go anywhere to get away from it all. But, Addison brings him to her grandmother's apartment, where she's been staying, and the peace he finds there is addicting. He needs more, and he's thrilled to have found a real friend in Addison.
Elijah and Addison truly start off as friends, and end up as best friends. She and her home are a place of respite from Elijah's busy life, and he's so thankful to have found her. But, Addison is in love with him, more so every day. She never lets on how she feels, as she believes he's still not over what happened at his non-wedding, or over his ex, and she doesn't want to lose him from her life. So she maintains the status quo until she just can't anymore. And boy do sparks fly when that happens! Their chemistry is crazy hot, and I loved their banter, both as friends, and in the bedroom. Tessa Bailey is known for her fantastically dirty talking heroes, but this time, the heroine was the dirty talking queen, and I loved that!
The side characters here were so well written too. Some were fun, and great friends of Elijah's. Some were infuriating family members. And that's not to mention some interesting paparazzi encounters. I loved the news headlines/tweets at the beginning of each chapter too. It made starting each one even more fun. I enjoyed learning about the city and the differing views of its citizens, via the headlines. Also, Elijah's butt having it's own Twitter account was hilarious, and I so wish it was a real thing! The fact that he was self-conscious of his behind made it even better.
While this was a friends to lovers story, it was so different in it's approach. They had only been friends for a few months, but their friendship was strong, and was the most important thing in each of their lives. When they became lovers, it seemed so easy, as they already knew most everything about each other, and this seemed like the final piece. Even though at the time neither of them realized how much it would change everything. But Addison was always waiting for the other shoe to drop, and no one can sustain that for long. Not to mention that she was getting hit from all sides by the paparazzi/news media, and she wasn't used to dealing with everyone invading her privacy, where Elijah had dealt with it his entire life.
I think what I loved most was that while Addison and Elijah were such very different characters, with different life experiences, and outlooks, they perfectly complemented each other. They really came to need each other, in addition to wanting each other. I love that moment in any story, when a character realizes how much better their life is with that other person in it. Especially when the other person is someone utterly unexpected. I live for that moment in a romance, and it was so great in this story.
I absolutely cannot recommend this book highly enough. Everything about it was PERFECT for me, and I can't wait to read it all over again. It's a keeper for certain! Also, I MUST know Naomi's story now, and what happened to her after she left her non-wedding! I really hope the author is inspired to write about this character. We didn't see a lot of her, as she was absent for most of the book, but I surprised myself with how much I want her story! I've got grabby hands for sure! Please, do yourself a favor, and READ THIS BOOK! You won't be sorry.
It's very... discombobulating.
For instance, I usually haaaaaaaaate when people don't use their words but here I found myself understanding that Elijah wasn't because he legit didn't know and Addison wasn't due to fear of losing her best friend. Ordinarily, I would find the ending melodramatic but in this instance I found myself getting verklempt.
Either the squishy marshmallow has gotten out of control or Tessa B. is a sorceress. <---only two possibilities
Things that I definitely always like are the love/lust/connection at first sight that doesn't read super cheesy and Tessa B. does this trope like a boss.
She also seems to favor a size difference and usually throws a beard in there somewhere which is always a win for me and in this case, Elijah is also Southern so the swoon was strong at Casa de Cupcake whilst reading this one.
Addison and Elijah give great banter and they truly do become friends who end up falling for each other and also having some of the hottest, most filthy, dirty talking sex I've ever had the pleasure of reading. #hattip
Would definitely recommend to friends to lovers fans.
Getaway Girl came highly recommended by a friend and since I'm newer to Tessa Bailey's books, I thought it'd be a surer read for me, and I really enjoyed this one! This is a strangers to friends to lovers story with a cinnamon roll politician H (who's dirty in bed) and a prickly, guarded, but actually just as sweet on the inside h. The story is told in first person, dual POV. A bit of both ow and om drama - the H is left at the altar by the h's cousin and the h spends much of the book thinking he could still have feelings for her (he doesn't); the h has a man thrown in her path a couple of times by the H's family but she's not interested (the H does get jealous); neither are virgins although it doesn't say how long it's been that I can recall and very little detail given; bc discussed/used.
Addison sees Elijah standing at the front of the church about to be married and she feels things, so when she realizes he's being jilted, she offers her car and then her apartment as an escape. Addison's in Charleston because her grandmother recently passed away, but she's the black sheep of her family due to a scandal involving her mother and her cousin's father. Elijah is running for mayor and has not only a lot of eyes on him at all times, but has been told constantly to worry about his reputation/how others view him. Yes, there are elements of their friendship being hidden at first and once their relationship starts in earnest, there are concerns about how each are perceived because of it.
I appreciated that this was dual POV especially because neither of these characters share their deepest feelings with the other at first. Addison's too scared and makes assumptions and Elijah thinks he can just show her how he feels, but is also gun-shy over expectations that he thinks comes with certain parts of relationships. Yes, everything comes to a head in dramatic fashion. I wanted them to just talk to each other so much, however the climax of the book was pretty great imo and we wouldn't have gotten it if they had.
Besides the feels part, there was a nice dose of humor, like Elijah's butt having its own social media and bulk buying cereal as an apology. Also several jealous/possessive scenes. Plus, plenty of steaminess that gets pretty dirty given how sweet and gentlemanly Elijah is, which it's emphasized is a side of him that's only been brought out by her. There's no comparisons that happen between Addison and her cousin in Elijah's mind, but his feelings for her do get mentally compared and it was abundantly clear to me that Addison is first and nowhere close to a consolation, which I loved. There's a bit of suspense/danger at the end and then a sweet epilogue a few months into the future with their HEA.

Addison Potts is a fabulous heroine. Sarcastic and always ready with a quip, but betraying a vulnerability that I fell in love with right away. Her backstory is laid out slowly and is the reason for her fronting, and the threads of her links to the city, through her absent mother and late grandmother, are woven in neatly and something she must resolve as she takes on board the ornament business and home she was left to take care of. Her friendship with Elijah, our hero, was so refreshing. They were so easy with each other right from the start and every interaction they had brought me such joy to read. He was a dream, but I wanted to shake him sometimes; he knew he had been sleepwalking through life and hitting relationship milestones at the rough time he expected to. Meeting Addison, or Goose as he affectionately calls her, is the catalyst for him to understand what it truly means to love someone.
This is a fantastic book featuring a pair of quick new friends turning to lovers and navigating what that means to them both with their baggage. It's heartwarming, steamy and emotional, with a neatly wrapped ending. It was my first Tessa Bailey, but it WON'T be the last, especially as I know that Naomi's story is told in another of her books!

I thought the female narrator was great. She was super animated and fun to listen to - the guy...only slightly less! His accent/voice felt a bit too gentle at times for all the dirty talk.
Still, I loved this book and finished it in one evening.

That said, this was still a great friends to lover story and it was funny, steamy and everything I want and need from someone who's quickly becoming a favourite author.
