Delivered with an authentic and intentional tone, readers are given insight into the author's experiences of retreats stemming from the many she has taken over the past thirty five years. These stories are aptly balanced with information about retreat schedules, ideas, focus points, logistics and other practical details that can only be gleaned from a seasoned pro. Unlike other self-improvement books that often end up too prescriptive, this book rejects the "one-approach fits all" mindset. Suk recognises the diversity and difference among the 'girlfriends' she writes for. Their seasons of life, family commitments, faith journeys, income and life stressors are all considered, as she notes that retreats are often as diverse and unique as the women who undertake them. Throughout each chapter, the inclusion of "what other women have to say" sections support this goal, highlighting how women experience and define their own personal retreats.
As a Christian, I appreciated how Suk wove scripture throughout the book to highlight key areas. She discusses how to incorporate prayer, worship and bible study throughout the experience to grow closer to God. For non-Christian women, this book remains applicable as the author explores the many and varied benefits of retreat, such as: rest, introspection, planning, building a life list, appreciating nature and seeking solitude.
Suk's warm tone throughout the book is welcoming and sincere. I found myself cheering her on with anticipation as she discussed the events that led up to her ultimate dream: a 5 day personal retreat. It is impossible to miss her sheer joy and appreciation for this sacred time.
Finally, as I sat down to savour this book on a beautiful Fall Sabbath - a realization hit. For those past few hours I had experienced a mini-retreat of my own. I had sat in silence, in a comfortable chair, drinking a cup of tea while I escaped from the routine of the everyday. I had reflected on my own life, areas that need attention and recognised the need for rest and reflection.
It's no surprise that I am now eagerly anticipating my first personal retreat!
