About Shell Education
Rachelle Cracchiolo started the company with a friend and fellow teacher. Both were eager to share their ideas and passion for education with other classroom leaders. What began as a hobby, selling lesson plans to local stores, became a part-time job after a full day of teaching, and eventually blossomed into Teacher Created Materials. The story continued in 2004 with the launch of Shell Education and the introduction of professional resources and classroom application books designed to support Teacher Created Materials curriculum resources. Today, Teacher Created Materials and Shell Education are two of the most recognized names in educational publishing around the world.

The grade 3 edition helps students build writer's notebooks by introducing a concept in a short mini-lesson (in the book) which often includes a brief "turn and talk" activity. Next, students glue a summary of the lesson (also in the book) into their writer's notebooks, which is organized to follow the 6 traits writing model. The summary usually has a "Your Turn" activity that student complete on the facing page of their notebooks before proceeding to independent writing in their writing folders. The suggested setup for writing folders includes spelling reference pages (yes, also in the book) as well as a pocket for drafts and a pocket for completed pieces.
After setting up the writing workshop with initial management lessons, a pacing guide suggests an appropriate order to mix idea, organization, sentence fluency, word choice, voice, and convention lessons. With 58 lessons overall - some of which are to be repeated as needed (management lessons) and some of which are to be spread over 2 or 3 days - there is plenty in this book to fill a year, especially if you are not able to do writing every day. At the same time, and especially if you are able to include writing instruction every day, there is plenty of time to integrate genre specific writing units into this format.
If you have struggled with organizing your writing lessons and student materials, and tailoring them to suit your specific grade level, I am sure you will love this series. I can't wait for the new school year to start!
