Editorial Reviews

Review

"A.P. Fuchs takes a glitter-free, practical look at sustainable self-publishing. If you want to build a solid foundation, listen to someone who was in the trenches long before indie was cool."
- Scott Nicholson, bestselling author of The Red Church

"Despite having self-published a half-dozen novels myself, even I learned something new. The narrative is clean and concise, as if your best friend is standing over your shoulder, lending a helping hand."
- Keith Gouveia, author of The Screaming Field

"A.P. Fuchs has been successfully self-publishing for nearly a decade. His vast knowledge comes from slugging it out in the trenches as a writer, editor, and publisher. He knows what does and doesn't work because he has tried it himself. He is an able teacher, with an eager willingness to pass on all he has learned."
- Justin Shauf, illustrator of The Purple Bean

"Even after taking on-line courses and reading as many books on the subject as I could, the minute details of self-publishing still eluded me. Without A.P. Fuchs's extensive knowledge and guidance, I would never have been able to hold a physical copy of my own novel in my hands."
- J.L. MacDonald, author of the Nightcat series

"Getting Down and Digital is a phenomenal resource for traditional and indie authors alike. Detailed with hard-won experience from an indie veteran, I was amazed at the scope of information provided within and have learned a veritable ton since reading it. This is going to be a book I keep close by for years to come as the industry continues to change. Any writer--new or established--should get this book immediately."
- Jon F. Merz, bestselling author of the Lawson Vampire series

A.P. Fuchs has been publishing for nearly a decade and making that his sole job for a majority of that. He has, to date, published thirty books. His publishing company, Coscom Entertainment, publishes not only his own novels, but some of the finest authors of the horror and superhero genres of this decade.

So, if anybody has the authority to write a book on the subject of self-publishing, it’s Fuchs.

First of all, let me point out that he has a conversational style that made the book easier to read that most in the genre. I felt more like he was sitting in the room, talking to me. It’s an odd thing to get a page-turner in a non-fiction book, but he succeeded here.

Fuchs, in his no-nonsense way, takes you from idea through marketing, discussing just about every aspect of self-publishing, including setting up your publishing company, possible tax write-offs, laying out the book for both print and ebook editions, cover design ideas and sales strategies, just to name a few. I already do some of the things in this book. But what makes the book such a treasure are those simple things that made me literally face palm myself, thinking, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

To be sure, I may not agree with all of what he writes. He makes his argument against Createspace, which is my printer. But that is about the only thing that stuck out. And considering that most of the other books that I’ve purchased recently have only had, at most, fifty percent of the content usable by me, Fuchs’s tome is one that I’ll come back to again and again.

First off A.P. Fuchs is a master at indie self publishing. He's been doing it for quite some time so he knows a thing or two. Or three, or four. This is a step by step book, but it also gives the "why". There are reasons for doing things a certain way, and A.P. Fuchs explains it. It's not just a checklist where you're left scratching your head thinking, "Umm, OK."

The author touches on other aspects to the self publishing, like marketing and setting up a business etc... (Understandably, every country/location will be different than what is mentioned, but there is enough info for the reader to find out what they need to do) The common misconception is that self publishing means uploading a novel (or the like) and in a short time being an instant success. Self publishing is hard work, and A.P. doesn't pretend that it isn't. He's straight out in saying it. (He even goes so far as to list the different types of people who would want to self publish. Once you figure out what category you're in, it makes it that much easier to set goals.)

What I commend A.P. on is the level of detail is setting up an account with the printer. Without giving away company names here (you'll have to read the book), let's just say that I am technologically inclined in that I code web sites for a living yet found the printer-in-question's site to be ... well, challenging to navigate. Frustrating at times.

I love that I can bookmark/hi-light key points in this book so I can go back for easy reference when I get stuck. I'm still new at the self publishing game so I do have to refer back to the steps taken. The book is presented in such a way that it is informative, yet not boring. What good is a how-to book if it's so dry that no one will read it?

This is a great how-to book that really does give you a step-by-step approach to starting your career in self-publishing. First, A.P. has you evaluate your personality and your motivations to discover if self-publishing is right for you. Then he covers every major area you will need to understand and master to become a successful self-published author. You'll receive the benefit of A.P.'s years of experience. It's like sitting down with him in person and picking his brain, saving you years of trial and error and lots of frustration.

From setting yourself up as a business, to how to format and prepare your novel for publication, to marketing A.P. leaves no stone unturned.

The end of the book includes various blog articles that, while sometimes a little repetitive, when paired up with the main part of the book, help to reinforce and drive home the information and message.

If you're a newbie or a veteran you can't go wrong adding this book to your collection. Highly recommended!

Note: I purchased this book through my wife's Amazon account.

Awesome Book! So helpful.

Fuchs cuts through all the Upload&Go hype and gives the straight-forward practical how-to info backed with humorous personal experience. He hasn't published just one book and claims to be an expert, I checked him out, he's published several of his own books and dozens of books by others!

I just wish he'd gotten more into how to run your own press when publishing others and how to work with authors!
