"Getting to Heaven" examines our Earthly life--conscious human choices--Biblical direction--"Jesus' departing instructions"--"the climax of [Christ's] teaching." Don Piper and Cecil Murphey again co-author for this new fourth book. It is more about witness and life-purpose than about Piper's 1989 death-back-to-life auto accident ("90 Minutes in Heaven"). Because that accident and recovery was such a determining point in the author's life, he frequently draws from it to make points in "Getting to Heaven." Piper's 90 Heaven minutes has definitely given him insight. He never discounts the struggles, pain, and spiritual strife he faced in the months and years after returning from Heaven. He suffered as a normal human.
In the authors' distinctive, honest, but not in-your-face-religion style of writing, this book tries to point out the path of preparedness for Heaven. There is enough scripture to validate issues but it is not a Bible study. It's more. Not a devotional--more. Not a fictional story--but the more is truth from numerous antidotes of both authors, stories of others discovered through their ministries and lives, and gospel stories. Experiences are used to teach. The more comprising this book provides inspiration as well as discipleship.
Use "Getting to Heaven" as a study rather than an evangelistic tool. It's for believers who struggle or question. Its 29 quick chapters could easily serve as a daily devotion over a month's period. All chapters end with questions and thought provoking departing instructions. Try reading chapter 29 first and again after reading all the chapters.
"Nobody wanders into Heaven," says the book, as it gives suggestions on how to trust God in chaos prior to getting to Heaven. It suggests that all earthly life is a second chance to get ready.

I was good with this book and this story until he told about punishing his child for playing in a dangerous ditch (that the boy had been told to stay away from) when a flash flood filled the ditch and whisked the boy away... And I lost all respect for this man. Clearly GOD was babysitting and had a passerby arrive at the perfect moment to rescue the boy. No child should be left unattended, nothing a parent is doing on this planet is THAT important. If I could ask Don Piper one question it would be this: "What would the punishment have been for the boy if he had been whisked away by a pedophile instead of a flash flood?"

Surely there are better ambassadors with better advice for getting into heaven.

We really like this book and have given it to others. As a Hospice volunteer I find this book to be real insightful and encouraging as I have the joy of walking others home. It has also given us insight into friends who are facing the final season of their lives here on earth. It comforting to have a 'taste' of what lives ahead. I will continue to use this book and be comforted.

After seeing Piper in person and reading his first book (Heaven Is Real), I couldn't wait to get my hands on this "sequal". Piper is very encouraging and it helps me motivate to be a better person. I am not afraid of what lies "beyond" and will look forward to Heaven myself.

Any book written by the author (Don Piper) will make for great reading. It does not matter if you are a Baptist, Catholic or Protestant, you will find this, and all of Don Pipers other books, to be quite inspirational.

Excellent book. You should have read 90 Minutes in Heaven first. I am finishing a Bible Study on Revelations now and have recommended Getting to Heaven to everyone in the Bible Study.

I loved this book UNTIL I got to the part where he writes that he says he forcefully punished his 9 year old more than ever after the boy accidentally fell into a ditch. He also writes about a friend who spanked his kid and makes it ok by saying his friend cried more than the kid and that God states we must discipline. This is another author who has taken God's words of love and manipulated them. I think the author needs to reread the new testament especially Matthew 18 where it specifically states whosoever offends a little one will not enter the kingdom of heaven and whoever does not forgive the trespasses of another will be unforgiven the same. I do not think author's who condone child abuse should be published so this message is for the author and publisher.
