Linda doesn't tell us that she is the kind of girl guys want. She's more concerned with her own conversation when it comes to boys and especially the one she is ecstatic to date. When Linda falls in with a group of guys, their actions and dialogue tell Linda's ensuing dilemma. While she tries to maintain a cool head, she juggles her friend relationships with that of her well-off boyfriend. His possessiveness is told with suspense, how it ricochets into her daily life and ultimately, affects an entire town. The author has also done a juggling act here, depicting how an irresistible love destroys people in his way, people who care about Linda. Woven in are the nuances of longterm relationships that prove the fiber of friendship and love.
Besides giving an almost panoramic picture of a Texas town, its car culture beginning at a carwash, and Linda's inner struggles, the author has provided a book that will undoubtedly capture YA readers. The prose is beautifully consistent and it handles teenage thoughts and dialogue with startling accuracy. Linda's experience with abuse and her felt obligations construct a plot that succeeded to keep me with every paragraph until the end. This is a moving novel.
