This is one of my very favorite books. If you want to teach in a way that is real, sustainable and honest, as well as fun, please read this book. And if you suffer as a teacher, double triple please read this book. You will be so happy you did!
From the Author
Getting Messy whole-heartedly views teaching as a creative endeavor. It's meant to be a guide and friend, a place you can go to for help, support and a few ideas when you find yourself lost, stuck, or at your wit's end with a class or group teaching situation. In the last chapter, I share my worst teaching experience ever, an experience that enabled me to find "third space." Third space is that place of expanded knowing and intuitive wisdom that happens when two or more people come together for a shared purpose. When it occurs in groups there's a palpable feeling of connection, community, synchronistic surprises and deep wisdom that is bigger than any individual person. This book will help you find third space in your own teaching situations.
I was recently interviewed by Jennifer Louden (founder of TeachNow and best-selling author of The Women's Comfort Book) for her TeachNow program. She wrote this about Getting Messy:
"This is one of my very favorite books about teaching. Nobody else outlines what teaching is really like and how to approach is soulfully like Kim does. I created an entire course before I read this book on teaching - and it's great - but I wish I had this book before I created it because it would be even better. Luckily, Kim let me interview her to be part of the course. :)
Getting Messy offers inspiration and renewal for anyone who teaches, trains, coaches or mentors others. I hope you enjoy it!

What I got was an experience. This book is filled with activities that foster creativity and excite the imagination. Kim Hermanson helped me to realize that my creativity is the powerful resource that I have--in the classroom and in my life. It is our creativity that opens opportunities and it is our creativity that allows us to connect with those we are trying to teach. As Hermanson says, "Our imaginations...hold the vision of what we are growing into." If we can connect with students at the level of the imagination, then we can help them glimpse for themselves what they can become, who they can become, and how they can become it.
Hermanson's approach is candid and honest. Her stories and insights weave together a tremendous resource that is sure to make a lasting impression on any reader that wants to begin seeing life through a wider lens--or perhaps to begin to see the lens through which they see life.
I truly got messy with this book. I wrote in it. I engaged in the exercises and I gained a greater appreciation for myself and my ability to visualize and create. I also gained a greater appreciation for those around me and the way that they see the world.
This book is not just for teachers or for mentors. I recommend it to anyone who wants to create space for themselves and others to flourish and thrive.
Dr. Hermanson's higher vision will give you the courage and wisdom to move beyond the dull, repetive methods and move to a new creative level of learning and process. The Digging Deeper exercises are designed to free the spirit, help you plant the seeds of learning, and connect with your inner wisdom.
"Getting Messy" inspires you to find your voice, own your own brilliance, and turn the messy stuff of being human into a growing experience. If you're looking for a creative and imaginative way to engage students, many examples and exercises, and an extensive reference section this is the book for you!
Kim Hermanson is a brilliant teacher!

P.S. I gave this book to a friend Kristi Steiner, who is also a teacher and here are her comments:
Truly, Judy...it is filled with ideas and notions that seem to speak volumes to my heart right now. I feel tingles all over that you would want me to have a copy. Thank you so much...and you will be in my thoughts often as I work my way through it this summer. I love her advice on being a beginner - the doorway to remaining authentic as one teaches. Lovely in every way.
