By "getting real" we face ourselves and the world without flinching, as painful as that may be. We drop the masks and illusions that we have lived by. We realize we are sinners in need of help. Like Kierkegaard the author knows that Christianity is a hard road, and we ourselves are often the main stumbling block to salvation. But if we can do the difficult work, the psalms that challenge us can also offer the healing balm of love and forgiveness.
Read this book in a humble spirit. Then, read the Psalms again. Chances are you will have new perspectives on some of them, and will continue to seek them out in your own attempt to "get real."
