Selene and Beck were reacting out of rebellion against the hidden persistence that remained with each other. They both second guessed each other with all the factors that led to broken relationships.
Beck was always distancing himself from emotional events that he could not handle and Selene's thinking about Beck had gone all wrong because of her insecurities and low level of confidence. She needed to trust him, needed to give him a chance.
Fortuna, Caterina Rosselli, Mrs Carotta, best friend Sarah, and Becks cousin Carole, which was also Selene's teacher, were very wise women who were valuable people in Selene's life. People she could count on to always know best and be there to guide her.
I always want a happy ending. When the going between relationships gets rough or tough in a romance I want to look ahead to the end of the story to see if a happy ending will be there, always hopeful.
I was intrigued with the Prologue of this novel. Can't say if I believe in witchcraft, tarot cards, palm reading, or spells, but did they all seem to have played a part with Beck and Selene's relationship? Or maybe it was just the right feelings they had for each other?
I enjoyed this novel immensely . I couldn't put it down and will continue to read Christi William's books.
I am always happy to give a review because I want Christi William's name to "fly". I like the way she writes, the way she brings history into her novels and all the research she does that goes "above and beyond" in her novels.
MAGICAL, MYSTICAL, WITCHCRAFT, I don't know.
Keep writing Christi, I can' wait to read more!!!
I enjoyed Selene's journey with the guys who just weren't right. Then she meets Beck. I loved him, he's such a sexy, great guy and I was hanging out for them to realize they belonged together.
The supporting characters in the story are fun too. The idea of the goddess 'interfering' in Selene's life was very creative. This is a sexy, fun, interesting love story. Highly recommend.
Meanwhile there's a... I guess the best word is 'witch'... Fortuna, who has taken an interest in Selene and tries to surreptitiously steer Selene onto the right path by casting spells from a distance at various points during the so-called romance. It was kind of strange, adding this paranormal element, because it didn't seem to fit into the story. It felt like the story kept shifting focus from Selene and Beck's relationship to Fortuna's feelings and motives, then back to the couple, instead of just focusing on the couple.
I also felt like Selene was a little bit TSTL (too stupid to live) in her behaviour. She keeps talking about turning over a new leaf and no longer making the same mistakes with men that she did before, but from what I could see she did the same thing with Beck! She put herself in a dangerous situation by letting her life revolve around him, when he hadn't made any commitment and she was feeling so insecure. When she thinks Beck doesn't want her, she goes back to her abusive ex! She says he's changed and she's decided they can be friends after all. I was flabbergasted. I don't think she's ready to be in a relationship!
It's not a bad book, but I just didn't like the way the characters dealt with each other. I don't like it when they have miscommunications right up until the end of the book, because you don't get to enjoy them being together and it makes the HEA harder to believe, due to the sudden resolution after such prolonged conflict. And I didn't like it that in the end, she blamed herself for all the misunderstandings between them, when he'd definitely played a starring role in those, too!
Fortuna, a Goddess of Desire, has taken an interest in Selene and casts spells in order to control Beck and Selene and their desire for one another. I liked this part of the story and how Fortuna uses her powers. It added the right catalyst to push these two together since they were both too “dumb” to do anything other than sabotage their relationship.
While I did not enjoy the characters of Selene and Beck, I did enjoy the story and the different nature the Goddess added to it. These two reminded me of whiny teenagers and I just wanted to reach into the pages and
boink their heads together! I’m curious to read more from this author and hope the characters aren’t as immature.
