Their technological resources destroyed, a colonizing expedition from Earth has been stranded on the world of Methuen for over two hundred years. Their continued survival is largely due to the organization of healers known as the Eumedicos and to the Seekers Veritas, a unique group composed of pairs of Bondmates, one human and one ghatti—a telepathic catlike being native to Methuen who bonds with a specific human for life. These Bondmates travel from town to town, settling disputes by truth-reading the minds and emotions of plaintiffs and defendants. While most people respect the Seekers, there are those who fear the ghatti powers. And now someone has begun attacking Seeker pairs.
What no one knows is that this destroyer has targeted one specific pair of Bondmates as special victims—the woman Doyce and the ghatta Khar'pern. For the key to defeating this deadly foe is locked away in Doyce's mind behind barriers even her ghattas has never been able to break down.

Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
The telepathic bonding between pairs of human Seekers and catlike ghattis enables the Seekers Veritas to distinguish truth from falsehood, insuring that justice prevails on the world of Methuen. When a renegade Seeker/ghatti pair begins targeting Seekers for murder, a young woman finds her world's salvation locked in the recesses of her hidden past. Strong characterization and inventive world building highlight this series opener, making it a good choice for most fantasy collections.

I am NOT a cat lover, yet I enjoyed reading this book the first time twenty years ago and rereading it again now. The reason I gave it a four star only is because this version of the book has so many typos and other mistakes that it took away from my enjoyment of it. Get an editor, for goodness sakes!

I enjoyed the book. I really did. The plot is interesting, and if you love cats it's a good read. Whoever formatted this for e-book or whatever program they used, needs to be put out to pasture. The cats use "mindspeech" which for them is represented in bold lettering. For humans it's in italics. Half the time this isn't correct so it's easy to lose who is talking. Also, there are pretty random scene jumps out of nowhere. One minute you're on a dusty road with one character, next paragraph you're reading about someone totally different. I'd say chapter skip, but there aren't really chapters. The book just comes in 5 parts.

Definitely a derivative of the Valdemar series, by Mercedes Lackey, only with cats instead of horses. Gets off to a slow start. and more psychoanalysis of the characters than was necessary, but still a good read, as it finds it's own level, and not just goes with someone elses' ideas. Became a good enough read that I will get the next book, just to see what happens.

This is the first in a fantasy sci/fi series that I read a long time ago when it first came out. I loved it then and was looking for it to come out on Kindle so I could reread it. I still love it. I would put it more in the fantasy genre because the science is practically nil. The planet is so earth-like as to make no difference whatsoever. But the story is well written. The characters are fully drawn and the author has written the voices of the ghatti (telepathic cat-like species) very well.

Doyce and her gatta - Khar - (who is more than just a cat) learn the hard way that their memories of the past have been plundered and falsified. How the entire group of Seekers and their gatti companions deal with this is a tale for the ages.

I owned the paperback version of the entire Ghatti's Tale series for many years. Recently I honed down my paper library due to space restrictions. As I sorted I checked my favorite books from years past to see if they were on Kindle. And this series was available. The original book for this series.... The Ghatti's Tale.... now resides in my Favorites category on my Kindle. I am so thrilled I now have the digital version of these favorite reads.

This would get 5 stars if it wasn't riddled with typos absent from the print edition. The replacement of pretty much every 'cl' with 'd' is particularly irritating.
