About the Author

Don Brobst was born in New Jersey and educated in Chicago. He currently lives in Birmingham, Alabama, where he is a practicing physician, a member of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and the medical director of the state of Alabama.

The father of three grown children and grandfather of five, Brobst divides his time between his practice, family, writing, and trips to Africa. He is dedicated to giving medical care in the African bush, as well as in Egypt and Ethiopia.

I could hardly put this down I cared so much about the main characters and many fearful things they faced. Opened my eyes to African village life and our common humanity. Paul Brandon, the Dr. And main character., was a true hero. A tribute to good men who care for people in other cultures. The main evil man reminded me of Idi Amin. Truly scary.

When a doctor returns to Africa after his wife and compatriot loses her battle with cancer back in the U.S., he settles in for the varied and numerous illnesses endured by the local people who already revere the man. But a warlord has other ideas. The action never stops as Dr. Paul makes the necessary transition from healer to leader of an underground movement against the warlord and his vicious plans for South Sudan. There are stunningly believable scenes of surgery in the outback. The struggle for survival escalates until Dr. Paul becomes legendary and the reader turns pages breathlessly right to the end.

Beautiful story...but one might need to shed off any skepticism and just for a while, pretend to believe in the power of spirits and the truth in superstitions. I myself believe in spiritual power, even more in the power of God Almighty; but I shun superstitions though my mother drilled them into me growing up (I have always questioned their logic).

The spirit and superstition aspects, are not really the meat of the story, but it lent more color in the already kaleidoscope setting that is Africa. It was enjoyable and exciting to read. More importantly, it resonates the message that the good will always prevail, at the right time.

The book is just short of a Rambo action movie once it gets started. Take off is a little slow , and some of the conversations are stilted at the beginning , but once the story gets rolling , it climbs and climbs . More excitement, more problems to overcome . I would have liked to see a little more about the main character's Christianity . But if you like thrillers, you will enjoy this one .

I purchased the MP3 audio-book not knowing what to expect. The story was engaging and thought provoking. The narrator did an excellent job. (Narrating an audio-book poorly can easily make an excellent story awful and even impossible to even listen to). Thoroughly enjoyed this book while driving. I can recommend this to male and female alike. Another plus, you don't have to worry about language or sexual situations that may not be appropriate for audiences sharing your commute. It will definitely become part of my personal library that I will listen to again.

Great Fiction Debut!

This was an excellent book - the plot was engaging and the story moved along well. The characters were believable and you could sense the internal struggles of some of the "bad guys." I got to a certain point where I couldn't put it down, I had to know how it finished. While there is a little bit of violence involved, it's a realistic portrayal of what is occurring in South Sudan right now. I love a good story with no foul language, sex scenes, or gratuitous violence. I hope Don keeps writing fiction!

I pre-ordered this book and was so excited when it arrived, I immediately started reading it. I must admit that because the main character is a missionary who loves and follows Jesus, it made it even more compelling for me to read. This book draws you in on page one and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the final page! It's the kind of book where the characters are real and you are drawn into their lives. You keep turning the page to see what will happen but you don't want the book to end! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves an action packed adventure with just the right amount of romance, suspense and spirituality interspersed throughout.

My first Don Brobst story. The characters and places jumped right off the pages into my mind as if I were a bystander watching everything! The story line is a definite change from my norm and the plot is strong. I've been to a few African countries and found the story, albeit very fictional, somewhat believeable. LOVED IT AND YES RECOMMEND IT! Now I need to find another Brobst to read ☺
