You'll probably read more details about this project in some of the other reviews here but I wanted to provide some additional info too. This stage musical was created when singer/songwriter John Mellencamp told mystery author Stephen King about a family incident and King decided it would make a great play. He wrote the script and Mellencamp wrote the songs. It premiered in 2011, I think, at the Atlantic Theater Company in Atlanta. For the "album", they got producer T. Bone Burnett involved and had famous actors provide brief spoken words for the characters and then singers/musicians do the songs.

This review is of the "Deluxe" edition of the set. It comes with two discs. One contains the songs as well as selected dialogue. Matthew McConaughey "speaks" for the character Drake while Ryan Bingham sings Drake's songs. Meg Ryan speaks for Monique and Roseanne Cash sings her songs. Other musicians include real life brothers Phil and Dave Alvin playing two warring brothers. Elvis Costello and Kristofferson are here too Mellencamp gets the closing track. The 44-page booklet (inconveniently) bound in the cardboard digipak contains the spoken words and lyrics on the CD.

The other disc is a DVD which contains a short 14 minute documentary on the project as well as the FULL script for the play - as a .pdf file. The script contains 94 pages spread over a 2 page layout with white letters on a black background. I found this difficult to read but I guess it could be printed out.

The package also contains a card with a "download code" to get the Mp3 versions of the songs on the CD without the dialogue. It appears that this is the same as the MP3 version of the album available on Amazon.

This album has really taken me by surprise. They've been pushing the collaborative element of the project on Letterman and Colbert this week, and I expected to be disappointed, which is usually the case when there's too much star-power on a creative endeavor. But the songs from this project are amazing--best stuff I've heard from John Mellencamp since "Pink Houses"! And the performances by the likes of Ryan Bingham, Neko Case, Rosanne Cash, Kristofferson, Dave and Phil Alvin, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, John Mellencamp, and Taj Mahal are, almost without exception, stellar throughout. Haven't liked a record this much in a long while. Deep, rich American Gothic, for me this is an Americana "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." It's great that Dave and Phil Alvin are featured in such a pivotal role! Looks like this may be the only thing I'm going to be listening to for a while.

Quick Tip: If you have an iPad, don't neglect to get the screenplay that goes along with this album, which is found on your favorite music/video/BOOK store located on your iPad. It is interactive and has snippets of music, animation and conversation included for a third of the price of the physical copy.

I liken this album to a a great theatrical soundtrack - the music is AMAZING by itself, but listening to the songs with their context in the screenplay makes them shine.

Excellent guest artists, who do a very powerful job, including Elvis Costello as the Devil, Neko Case as the Girl in the Middle, Kris Kristofferson as the Father and many other performances that flesh out the screenplay in vivid color and emotion.

If you're into blues or something akin to Tom Waits, or a fan of any of the guest artists on this album, don't pass this one up! You'll find new things with every play-through and depth with the reading of the screenplay.

Welp, I was lookin' for some stanky, swampy, real downhome horror blues and yup, welp, here I found it. Following in the footsteps of Sir Robert Johnson and Robert Zombie (the #1 horror blue man) and #1 harp play Dean Koontz, the music is tight. I don't want to get "Carrie'd" away but "I was born in a small town" (Bangor, Maine) and the ghost brother blues is what I know. I dont want to seem like an "American Fool" but I had no idea John "Cujo" Mellencamp was such a rocker. This album really gives me a "Ry Cooter." All in all the Ghost Brothers Of Darkland County are probably the best ghost brothers. I haven't been this pleased since my purchase of the Smash Mouth: Recipes from the Road: A Rock 'n' Roll Cookbook. Without this book my life would be a "Misery" All in all this book really is "IT."

Everyone shines dully in the dusty moonlight of this Burnett/King/Mellencamp masterstroke. Every musically and lyrically excellent song on this set is a dusky gem. And each is knitted to the next by a chalky skein of dialogue alternately thigh-slappingly funny and back-country melancholic. There is just enough spoken word to create a story-line but not so much as to circumscribe the run of imagination. This endows the whole enterprise with a friable majesty and well-deep depth. The length and coloring of the songs are in seamless symmetry with what precedes them and with what follows them. Each actor and singer is perfectly cast and executes exquisitely. This work is an immensely enjoyable chunk of authentic Americana that re-creates the radio-play days of yore for a lost generation. Dim the lights, pull up your afghan and settle in for the chilly haunted house ride that is Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.
