Due to circumstances, Sarah is stuck at her grandmother's horse farm with Casey, a work hand at her grandmother's ranch. If Sarah doesn't take the horse farm - or sell it off - it goes to Casey. They have fantastic chemistry, with more in common than Sarah realizes. When things get dangerous at the farm, they have to rely on each other to survive. They have such warm chemistry. I really wanted these two characters to find happiness, and be at peace with themselves.
I'm definitely going to be rereading this book in the future!
The author also managed to handle a damaged hero with finesse. I forgot he had a physical handicap because the person he was, the attitude he had, took up all my attention. I loved his character; the blend of vulnerability at times, and strength at other times, drew us in and gave a sensitive insight into the way people feel when made to feel lesser because of circumstances beyond their control. Loved the female lead and her quirky personality so at odds with her shaky self confidence and in all thoroughly enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading more from this author.
Both Sarah and Casey have their own secrets but learn in time that the best family you have is the one you make for yourself!
Looking forward to any new stories from McKenna Dean! Thank you for this one!!!
My first read by this author I didn't know what to expect. This book had all the cheesy goodness I loved, mixed in with good character development and a surprised mystery that even I didn't see coming, made this book more than entertaining, it made it fun, emotional and down right amazing.
I have to say, this book hooked me almost right away. Right from that car hid down with Sarah's jerk of a man, with made me want to stuff his phone were the sun don't shine. What a inconsiderate..-insert a not so G rated world starting with P-, not only with the way he treated her about her grandmother passing, but about her interest (that use to his), using the excuse that they're adults. The adult thing to do would be not embarrassed about your likes, interest, especially your partners, that you're going to spend the rest of your life with. She should have left him on the side of the rode. Well done to the author for creating that dislike, so when Casey's moved in, it made me feel like it was well warranted and not annoying. Simon can go pound sand.
Outside of the well rounded multi layered characters, the writing was easy to follow and had a lightness to it, that just warmed your heart strings. I have to say as much as I liked Sarah, I was really drawn to Casey. There was just something in his demeanor that was refreshing. He wasn't your normal brewing alpha male MC. He was realistic and even though he was a shifter, he felt very human to me. My disconnect from Sarah was her biased shallow view on country men, and how only well read educated men were worth her time. I'm a opened minded person and I come from a small town, and not have I once thought like that. So on that front, I don't think Sarah and I would have gotten along. Well not at the start of the story anyways.
Overall I very much enjoyed this book and I'm lovin the whole shifter security thing. I'm going to have to go back a read the first book, they are written as stand alones, so no worries about reading out of order. If you haven't guested I'm giving this book my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval.

So thank heavens for McKenna Dean. Here we have a wonderful hero – a competent, intelligent, 100% man (Casey) who doesn’t need to treat the heroine as if she has all the fine independent qualities of a doormat. Shock, horror – he **respects** her. They are equals. She has as much agency as he does as their romance develops and neither of them are so overwhelmed they lose control. The contrast between this and the dross I’ve tried to read recently is shockingly wonderful. Here is a relationship that has all the elements of the alpha-doormat books – shifters, threats and danger, fated mates – but without all the control/love-slave baggage the others seem to delight in. These are two adult, independent, fully rounded characters whose coming together is done with restraint and yet is far, far sexier and more passionate than all the others combined.
In short, this is a book for adults who like their stories to be about characters they can like and respect rather than despise, characters who meet (in Sarah’s case) personal betrayal by those she thought loved her, characters who grow and change, who together face up to unexpected danger, and who find each other in the middle of adversity.
Honestly, it’s a good story and a great read. It has adventure and romance. It has realistic, likeable characters and it just zings along. Thoroughly recommended!
“Sometimes I think I’m still stuck in the events of that summer.”
Ghost of a Chance is the second book in the Redclaw Security Series by McKenna Dean. Why have I not heard of this author, or this amazing series before now? Something this good should be on every paranormal/shifter romance reader’s ‘must read’ list. I think that even people who don’t normally choose paranormal stories, would like what they find between the covers of this book. I am so glad that I stumbled across this book, because I loved everything about it and Ms. Dean is now on my “Must Read’ author list! I look forward to many more reading adventures with her books in the future!
This is the second book in the series and even though it can be read as a standalone without feeling like you are missing parts of the story- it captivated me in such a way that I feel compelled to go back and read the first book as well- because I want to know everything about Redclaw, the wonderful characters, and the amazing stories.
This book has so much going on in it, in a good way- from shifters, secrets, betrayal, hidden agendas, suspense, action, romance, learning to accept yourself, new beginnings, learning to stand up for yourself, danger, fated mates, finding and embracing your true self, finding where you truly belong, excitement, strength, dramatic developments, emotion, twists, and a sizzling romance.
The story is really fascinating, Ms. Dean writes so incredibly well- she has a real gift for telling a mesmerising story! Her detailed descriptions produced such vivid images that I was transported into the story where I was able to ‘see’ it all so clearly play out in front of me. I was part of it all, with a ringside seat to the production.
The characters are fully realised individuals, brilliantly created to have their own unique traits- they are so believable, and quite endearing….or detestable, as in the case of a few that we meet through the story. I loved how much Sarah grew and developed over the course of the story- I was cheering her on! Casey was just wonderful, perfect really.
Bring on the next book!
Thank you, Ms. Dean!
