There are a few places when one character tells a second character something the second character would already know in order to convey information to the readers. The dialog doesn't flow quite as smoothly when that happens. The main character was well developed enough to make me want to shake sense into her when she does something stupid. I did love her snarky sense of humor.
I will be trying a second book in the series. This is a good book for times when one wants light reading and entertainment.
As other reviewers have noted, very little mention of Christmas beyond the title and two ghosts who, though they provided timely assistance, appeared only occasionally. I found this mildly annoying, since the title led me to believe the holiday and ghost would be central to the story. I wondered at one point if they were added later to an already-finished manuscript, perhaps at the publisher's request.
Unlike some Kindle books, this is well edited and the proofreader seems to have caught any typos. Yes, the author left some loose ends in character development and backstory and dropped hints regarding future plot action, but if she hadn't, there would be no incentive to read the next book!
A very enjoyable cozy mystery. I have high hopes for the rest of this series!
When Mele first arrives, she finds a dead body in her aunt's front yard and her aunt gardening up a storm in the backyard, grooving to some loud music, oblivious to the body on her stoop. Of course, her aunt lands on the suspect list, as does the man's wife. With a little help from some townies, Mele pokes around and tries to take the suspicions of the local police detective off her aunt but finds herself in danger!
Just enough character development to make a reader want to continue the story. I enjoyed the HI theme
Note: awhile means "for a while," so there's no need to say for awhile, as it's redundant
When the detective investigating the murder showed his suspicion for everyone, including Mele, she was sure she should have stayed home. But it was the appearance of a ghost from her childhood in Hawaii which unsettled her the most. What was going on? Mele felt she was in over her head – and was she in danger as well? This wasn’t the Christmas she’d envisioned…
A Ghost for Christmas by J.D. Winters is my first by this author and the first in the Destiny Bay Cozy series, and I was impressed. A light cosy mystery which was fun and entertaining – I didn’t guess the identity of the murderer either. I’ll be checking out more work by this author. Highly recommended.
In her quest to solve the case, in addition to her own investigative skills, Mele has help from a ghost from her Hawaiian past and a strange apparition that stalks her aunt’s garden.
A Ghost for Christmas by J.D. Winters is a sterling cozy mystery, with hints of romance—expected, since the author is a noted romance author—and healthy doses of mystery and paranormal phenomena. You’ll be tickled and tense from start to finish as Mele stumbles her way to a stunning conclusion.
