Ghost of the Nile: Gods of Egypt is a beautifully written novel. Scott’s writing style is descriptive and confident of its place in time. In ancient Egypt, much can change in 200 years but it is not inconceivable that much also stays the same so Periseneb is able to insert himself easily into a desperate society looking for a hero with ease and minimal suspicions. Scott conveys the quite desperation of Neithamun and the people who care for her and stand by her with an elegant ease that enables her to layer the plot. We may be with Neithamun on her journey but ultimately it’s the fate of the entire Nome (province) at stake.
While Scott allows minimal contact between Neithamun and her rival, the tension is strong. The characters are on a very tight timeline with few willing to aide them before Periseneb arrives. The chemistry between the two characters is believably strong. While both attractive people, their connections are based on personality rather than snap and fit parts. Scott has a great talent for writing fallible people in an uncertain world for whom the readers will cheer.
Ma’at is perhaps one of the more interesting and best-written Gods of Egypt in Scott’s series. She is the goddess of honesty and perhaps more direct and sensible than the other deities of our acquaintance. Her motivations are a mystery.
Ghosts of the Nile is a wonderfully written piece and, in my opinion, while all of the books are spectacular is the best book in the Gods of Egypt series. If you are a fan of historical romance, do not miss this fabulous author.
The ancient religion of Egypt, with its sometimes petty, sometimes benevolent and always unpredictable gods, adds a wonderful twist to this classic yet original story of love and redemption.
His ghost given mortal form with only thirty days to fulfil his unknown task, the goddess returns Periseneb to his old home – the once grand estate of Heron Marsh – now reduced to a crumbling and parched ruin by a greedy neighbour, tyrant, letch and all-round embodiment of evil, Haqaptah, who has diverted the life-giving waters of the Nile. At first Periseneb thinks his challenge is to rescue the estate of Heron Marsh from destitution, but as he becomes entangled in both the estate and local politics, he learns what awaits him is far more complex and onerous. When he falls in love with Neithamun – the spirited, beautiful and determined mistress of the estate – knowing he must return to the realm of the dead – one of the greatest challenges he faces is the battle with his own heart. Does he even want eternal peace now he’s fallen in love? And does he have any choice when it comes to those fickle, imperious Egyptian gods who treat humans as playthings? This reader was guessing what would happen right up until the very end. With a terrific climax full of curses, corpses, battles and magic, I finished this effortlessly told tale feeling as though I’d been on a rollicking ride with a wonderful cast of well-drawn characters. Thank you, Veronica, for such a great read!
