Other books are okay, but they're too mushy.
Others would be great, but they're too convoluted.
Let me tell you something, this book is great and it isn't too anything! I love it, and I'm not being compensated in any way to say this!
I was in the middle of reading all sorts of different books. These were really good books, but all of them were too something. I needed a book that wasn't. I needed a book I could just relax with and have a nice decent, intelligent read and if there was some mystery and a dead body or two with maybe a little romance but no heads flying across the room, I would be happy, know what I mean? And if it wasn't X-rated, then by golly, i might even stop and write a review of the darn thing!
Well here I am and this is about to turn into a review. I kid you not, just keep reading.
Cassie and her sister live in some unnamed part of Australia. She's a 29 year-old Cardiologist at her local hospital with a bump on her head, a slight case of memory loss, and a gorgeous guy in an out of date rain coat and fedora suddenly sitting in the morgue with her. Where he came from and what he's doing in "her" morgue is beyond her, what SHE'S doing in the morgue is a bit troublesome at the moment, not as troublesome as the blood trickling down her forehead and into her eye or the total stranger in the fedora demanding answers from her, after all, the morgue was reserved for doctors and dead guys and unless he was one or the other he needed to leave! About the time Mr. Fedora expresses concern for the blood trickling down her face and reaches out to help her and their body parts go right through each other, Dr. Cassie starts putting two and two together and figures out she has inherited a genetic condition that has kept her mother hiding out in the Outback her entire adult life, she can see and speak with ghosts!
About the time she's coming to terms with this, her patient whom she had admitted the night before for a routine cardiac procedure, who she was planning to discharge this morning, comes walking into the morgue without bothering to open doors the way we normal people do, and asks her if she'd be kind enough to go to his home and take his will to his solicitors as he has no next of kin and he's concerned about it. Cassie is trying to figure out why the man is dead, the man didn't realize he WAS dead, he just overheard some staff mention they saw her in the morgue and he felt so good he thought he'd drop by.
So now that the ghosts are piling up faster than Cassie can keep track, she decides to contact her sister who is a journalist who specializes in paranormal activity and we are off and running into a book of murder, but not too ugly, attraction and love, but nothing too kinky, devils and angels and redemption and an ending that makes you buy the next installment of the book, but you kind of want to because I, at least, think the big black dog got a raw deal and deserves a better family, and there are plenty of loose ends that could be tied up if there was a Book 2.
So I just bought book 2. I'll let you know what I thought of it if you like. Let me know if you found this review helpful. If you did, I'll write one for the next book. But the first book was great, even if this review was incomprehensible, so make sure you read it, and write a comprehensible review of your own.
I was just in first third of the book, and I already had purchased the two other installments as I refuse to stop to read Cassie and Eliot story until it reaches its end, well I do hope the third book gives them closure.
It is my first read by Charmaine Ross and it will probably not be the last, as I purchase two more books with the two sequels.
I do rate the books I read for the pleasure they bring to me, and sometime, like here, 5 stars is not enough.
Strange as I do not like story with cliffhanger, I like my reads as standalone stories, but the author was so talented that I agree with her work, one book is not enough, it give so much more time to develop her universe and all the characters.
Cassie is one hell of a woman, even if she grew up with a mom who has the same “cursed gift” than she has now, instead of rejected it, she embraces it plainly. She just straight in this new world and is ready to do her best even if it might be scaring or horrific.
For a surgeon, she was surprising bold with the help of her crazy funny sister, and for Elliot, she became incredibly fearless to save him.
Elliot Stone is a man from my heart, good mannered, chivalrous and full of care. Even as a ghost, he fights his way to save Cassie even if it means disappearing forever.
And as his memory and past history begin to slowly unravel, I felt like Cassie, unable to believe it is really what he thinks it was.
So now excuse me, but I’m running read Spirit, the sequel as I can’t to learn more about their destiny and the fate they have to fulfill.
