Some stories are too short which brings them down. Some pretty bloody with lots of explicit death. I read through more stories and thought they were just okay at best.
I became a Varsity scout leader (14-15 yr olds) and noticed neither the boys nor leaders ever told stories at campfires and the boys retired early to their tents. Very odd to me as what happened to staying up around the campfire. Our group is boring around a campfire.
Since I'm no ghost story teller either, I bought these and pulled them out at a campfire and had a boy help pick out a story. He wasn't that interested in the stories and thought the stories were a bit weird and grossly disturbing and I agreed. I tried to get him to prepare the story verbally to deliver it better but he wouldn't and it showed when delivered and the other boys just seemed bored. I had a couple other boys read some and they had trouble reading them and expressing them as well but, it was a good teaching moment.
Most stories start off slow but then just jump off a cliff to try to keep them short and surprise you. I didn't like the stories much and felt they were oddly disturbing. I haven't used them is a few years.
