Poor quality would not buy again

We purchased this video to replace our DVD version which got scratched. We were excited to bet the blu-ray version expecting better quality, but the look is somewhat pixelated and the colors off. We ended up taking out the blu-ray version and putting in the DVD version to finish watching it, and though that version was better it still had some visual issues. We will not be watching this as often as we would have if the quality were better. Shame. We were needless to say disappointed with this purchase.

There are enough reviews of the movie itself, and I'm not going to rehash them. Suffice it to say, it's a classic mid-1980s goofball comedy, with some definite sci-fi cred.

This version, the Blu-ray Mastered in 4K disc, is really quite nice. The one key thing that I noticed (and that I love) is that they left the film grain intact. Many people will find this objectionable, as they'll feel it's a defect or a poor-quality transfer. But it's not. It's great because they have recreated the way the film looked when it was presented theatrically. There is something particular to the film stock used in the 1980s that gave a lot of films a certain look and feel. That is maintained here, and it is the way the filmmakers wanted it to look at the time of its creation. Remastering is one thing, but "recreating" is another thing entirely.

Also, the sound, while not 100% awesome, is quite good. In particular, for the first time I was able to clearly and powerfully hear the dog/demon in the refrigerator say "Zuul." I've seen the movie a dozen times and it never resonated as clearly.

I can't speak about the Ultra Violet digital version that usually comes with this disc. I bought a pre-owned copy form Amazon Warehouse and the digital copy had already been downloaded (as I expected).

Classic 80's Comedy on Blu-Ray

If you remember the eighties, there is no way you don't remember Ghostbusters. This film was more than just a movie when it came out, it was an event. Who didn't have one of those T-Shirts? I think I still have mine somewhere...

Of course, I wouldn't be writing this review if I thought the movie was simply all hype. Beneath all the marketing, toys and catchy song lies a very funny film. The type of comedy we hardly see these days. Ghostbusters is quite a clever mix of comedy along with bits of other genres including a bit of horror. The anchor being the great performances of Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson, all in the peak of their careers in comedy at the time. I'm not going to go real deep into the film as I want to discuss the Blu-Ray transfer but it's a great script, has wonderful acting and a great pace. The special effects might look a bit out of date in this age of CG but some hold up pretty well more then 20 years later.

So this film is finally available in HD and its looking great. A lot of the details lost over the years are back and the colors, especially the ones involving the special effects come out strong and bright. Even when in theaters, the film had a grainy, subdued look to it, similar to Saving Private Ryan. Whether that was the director's intent or simply bad quality film, the years were certainly not helpful in improving it. A lot was lost when the film was finally released on VHS and DVD did nothing to help that. This BD really does the film justice but it is by no means comparable to recent releases. The film is after all, over 20 years old. But there is no doubt this is the best this film has looked ever. Better perhaps than in theaters.

Where this release really shines is in the Special Features department, with a plethora of content from multiple commentaries to documentaries. They not only have included material from when the film came out along with extras from previous releases but brand new content as well. Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of a picture in picture track where several people, among them Ivan Reitman, Dan Akroyd and the other actors, producers and other people involved in the film comment along with the movie. Must see stuff!

Ghostbusters is a must-buy in and of itself so I would recommend it to anyone who likes comedy but this release really sweetens the deal. The transfer is awesome, the extras are many and that song... well who can forget that?

Sweet Baby Jesus the 80's movie that I always wanted but was too poor to get until now.... Absolutely loved the first one the second was great but I have to say the first Ghostbusters movie had it all. Such a shame Harold Remus (Egon )passed away God Bless His Soul would of loved to see him, Bill Murry and the gang together for the new Ghostbusters live action movie. The extras, vido, sound quality are pretty good and I must say every dollar was worth it.

When it comes to Ghostbusters, there isn't much of anything to say that hasn't been said already. Dan Akyroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson put on one of the best performances of their lives. The technobabble between Akyroyd and Ramis's characters were funny, engaging, fascinating, and just fun to listen to, and Murray's dry humor fit perfectly well and was just hilarious. Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver's performances were amazing as well and Slimer was just awesome.
The transfer to Blu-ray went amazingly well. Sure there is a little grain and the 80s' effects were more visible but that was part of the movie. It was made in 1984 after all. All in all it's a must buy for any Ghostbusters fan young and old.

Recently purchased this film classic after waiting for a boxset of both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 to show up on the release calendar for Sony to no avail. Plus seeing as a third part is in limbo, for good reason, and my 3 year old son loves the franchise (Raising him like an 80's kid), I got over waiting for boxset and grabbed this. We love it. Many of the effects look dated now due to today's obvious FX improvements and high definition's crystal clear picture, but the magic of the performances still shines through. No pop-culture enthusiast or movie lover should miss out on owning this as a part of their film collection. Who you gonna buy? Ghostbusters!

OK, first off, let's get this out of the way, Ghostbusters is THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE - FACT! That's not up for debate and if you disagree you're wrong and will have to live with that. That said, I don't want to go over the movie. Everyone has seen it, knows it, can quote it. It would be pointless to go over old ground.

So, onto the "4K" conversion. It would be fair to say that when I originally bought Ghostbusters on Blu Ray, like most fans, I was hugely disappointed. As strange as it seems, the original DVD release seemed far superior so when it was announced that Sony were going to go back and do the job properly I was over-the moon. That feeling ended the second I stuck this blu-ray into the player.

In can't be argued that this is the clearest Ghostbusters has ever looked. Whilst it's quite grainy which isn't usual for a film of this age, it doesn't distract from the film. What does distract is the seemingly muted palette Sony seem to have chosen. From memory, Ghostbusters was never just a green and red movie! Sony appear to have thrown out nearly ever other colour and the result is awful. There's absolutely no yellows, particularly in the neutral tones for the most part of the film with green and in particular red, permeating the majority. Everything that should be those colours seem distractingly enhanced and the whites in particular have a horrible redness. Sure there are scenes, especially the darker ones, that do look way better. The ballroom scene and the Stay Puft are definitely the highlights of this disc. But anything in daylight - forget it!!

Overall this feels like a missed opportunity...AGAIN! Sony really don't appear to know how to treat this movie. This could have been one of the greatest conversions of recent years, especially as one of the first 4K releases (it's not really 4K but thats a whole other topic) but it seems like such an unfulfilled promise.

Oh well :(

I bought this version of Ghostbusters on Blu ray as I was let down by the poor transfer on the previous release. Mastered in 4K release is miles better in picture quality, colour and dealing with grain. However there are some scenes where its nearly as bad as the previous release. All in all though a vastly improved Blu ray compared to its previous release.
