This PSP version of the Ghostbusters game has your character come in as a new recruit on the Ghostbusters team. It follows the same storyline as the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game (so far in the time I've played it), but has a more cartoon look to the characters and graphics than the games on those systems.
The Good:
- It feels like a Ghostbusters sequel, with the original gang (and most of the cast members adding their voices) reprising their roles. The music in the game is the same music that is in the original movie, and that makes it even better!
- There are new weapons to utilize, other than the proton pack.
- The story ties into the lore that the original movie created. There is the Tobin Spirit Guide that lets you log in ghosts that you have scanned, one of the bosses you fight is the library ghost from the movie, and there are references to Gozer and others.
- You can damage everything in a stage with your Proton Pack, and you tally up a dollar amount of damage...which seems to be ok to do and encouraged!
- It is an enjoyable time-killer, especially if you like anything Ghostbusters related, but don't expect it to be on par with the PS3 or Wii versions.
The Bad:
There are too many glitches to write about, but the main ones are:
- wall and texture pop-ins happen all the time.
- Hit detection is off about half the time. In some cases, my weapon didn't even continue to fire in the direction of my on-screen crosshairs. During my fight with the Stay-Puft Marshmellow Man, my weapon would not do any damage most of the time and there was a constant prompting by Ray, telling me to "use debris that he is throwing at me to defeat him". But, it was glitching and he wasn't throwing any! Eventually, though, I beat him with my normal weapon.
- The controls are difficult to get used to, but that is a downfall of the PSP design. Since there is no second thumbstick to use as the camera move/turn button, you are forced to turn and tilt up and down with the Triangle/circle/square/x buttons. The default speed of this is set too fast in my opinion, making targeting quite hard to do. Luckily, you can change the speed in the options menu.
- There are a TON of audio glitches throughout. On every single stage, some sound effect would get repeatedly looped during the entire duration of the stage, sometimes ending only when the game went to save or a cutscene was able to turn it off. During one of the cutscenes, the sound effect was still playing, and the cut scene was silent. I couldn't hear what the characters were saying, and then when the cutscene was halfway over, the correct audio began playing from the beginning, making it out-of-sync with what was happening on screen.
I make it sound really bad...and the glitches are, but the game is still playable and occasionally fun. However, I own the PS3 version of this game also, and can't help but wish I was playing that over this PSP version. If you don't need it to be portable, I suggest purchasing a console version over this one. But, this will help satisfy your Ghostbusters game cravings during a roadtrip or when portability is a must!
no boxart but as long as the disc is fine, I'm fine with it.
So far I've been having a blast with the game.
This is going to be in my collection for sure.
