Just finished listening to the album 3 times already from beginning to end. It is just simply amazing. I won't lie, I had some doubts on some of the singers that were announced a few months back, but soon realized it was Mr. Tobias Sammet that was behind the castings. Tobi always seems to make things work and ladies & gentlemen let me tell ya, he did not disappoint on this album. He put every singer in their rightful track and made them noticed. For example, the track "Master of the Pendulum" with Marco Heitala, it was perfect, I couldn't hear or see anyone else singing that song, but Marco, it was created for him to sing. He has done this on previous albums with Michael Kiske (Ex-Helloween, Unisonic), he always seemed to put Kiske in the right track to sing at the right time. Then again, everything Michael Kiske is in, instantly becomes magic. Every song in this album gave me goosebumps and every singer did a fantastic job. I could describe every song and every singer in this album. but the characters I could use here is limited. Buy this CD even if you're not a fan, listen to it, share it, kiss it, sleep with it, take it everywhere you go, and when all is said and done, Frame it somewhere special in the house. Album of the Year in my honest opinion. Thank you for reading my review, but most importantly, thank you Mr. Sammet for creating this masterpiece of an album and assembling great singing talents together and making memorable songs. See you and the others live in Anaheim, CA in House of Blues. God Speed!

The new Avantasia epic is a fantastic release that comes close to being the best album of the long running project. Ghostlights combines heavy metal, power metal, hard rock, AOR, ballads and a good dosage of bombast with exceptional songwriting and the vocal talent of some of the best singers of the rock and metal scene. Due to the inclusion of several ballads that are not exceptionally impressive as well as a few unimpressive choruses that drag down some very good songs Ghostlights unfortunately fails to achieve gold status. Still the new album is a very impressive release and a future classic.

The instrumental portion of the album is handled by Tobias Sammet on bass and lead vocals, Sascha Paeth (ex-Heaven's Gate) on guitars, Felix Bohnke (Edguy) on drums , Miro in charge of the orchestrations and guest guitarists Bruce Kulick (ex-Kiss, ex-Meat Loaf) and Oliver Hartmann (ex-At Vance). The cast of guest vocalists includes Geoff Tate (ex-Queensryche), Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Jorn Lande (ex-Ark, ex-Masterplan), Michael Kiske (Unisonic, ex-Helloween), Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids), Robert Mason (Warrant, Lynch Mob), Marco Hietala (Nightwish), Bob Catley (Magnum), Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation) and Herbie Langhans (Beyond The Bridge).

“Seduction Of Decay” is the heaviest song on the album and features a refreshing but not very impressive performance by Geoff Tate, oriental riffs and a strong chorus. This is definitely one of the album’s highlights. The title track is a fast power metal number featuring the most powerful vocal performance of Michael Kiske in an Avantasia album, high notes, screams, an addictive chorus, great drumming, some impressive guitar solos and vocal contributions by both Sammet and Lande.

So here is the first surprise of 2016 and here also is the sequel I wasn’t sure was going to actually see the light of day. 2013’s Mystery of Time was solid but didn’t have the same magic Sammet had delivered with the Scarecrow Trilogy. As that was touted as the first in another series I was unsure if we would actually see Tobias bring his latest project to fruition …but here it is and I must say the music and the caliber of the guest performances have definitely exceeded all expectations. I admit I had a difficult time grasping the concept with Mystery of Time, but this time around the message is clear in these 12 “chapters/dreams,” – wake up from the monotony of daily life (and all of its control) and see the truth about the world around you, both visible and invisible.

No, Sammet has not returned to the world of The Metal Opera as these songs share much more in common with the best material from The Scarecrow and The Wicked Symphony – the melody and catchiness factor reign. Musically there is a nice mix of classic anthem rock and melodic power metal (nothing new there) but these songs really have some killer hooks – very addicting. Vocally Sammet does his usual “I need to stamp my voice all over this music” lead as character/scientist Aaron Blackwell, and he does it well. But this time the guest vocal performances are much more impressive. His long-time friend Michael Kiske tears it up on a few of the faster tracks (“Ghostlights” and “Unchain the Light”) and Bob Catley (Magnum) once again appears with his soulful rock voice (“A Restless Heart…”). And the always-consistent Jorn Lande plays “temptation” – performing with his usual perfect-metal-voice zeal. But there are some surprises this time as well.
