Good Story, Good Writing!

This is was a fun, quick read. The plot centered around an unsolved mystery in a full sensory immersion, state-of-the-art online gaming world. A technology journalist (with a knack for disarming guarded or unsociable experts) sets off on a mission to uncover the truth in an attempt to win another Pulitzer.

It took me a little while to get into this book. The first part was a little slow, but ultimately proved to be necessary for character development. I enjoyed that the protagonist was portrayed in a way that didn't make him seem like a superhero. I typically don't like first-person narratives, but the author did a good job keeping the main character's self-image realistic. The protagonist is a journalist, so I forgave the use of unnecessarily poetic language that occasionally made its way into the book and normally drives me nuts in first-person narrative books.

The story itself was great. I don't think a reader needs any knowledge about gaming to understand concepts in the book or appreciate the story. I really enjoyed the pace of the story, and how the author didn't waste a lot of time with unnecessary dialog. I think the way the protagonist was able to get some of the people to trust him (given their unfamiliarity with him and the specific context of their lives at the time) was a little unrealistic, and probably the only thing I would have liked to see fleshed out more.

The ending of the story was foreshadowed, and I hate to admit it, but the specific details did surprise me. It's been a while since I've had that happen, where I can guess the broad theme at the end, but still manage to be surprised by the details. I hope the author writes more books about some of these characters. It was quite enjoyable.

techno thriller

A thoroughly enjoyable techno thriller.

While, in my opinion, there were one or two scenes that could have used a tightening of dialogue, the work is well-edited, strongly developed, and deeply engrossing.

Carefully written so as not to overwhelm the reader with technical jargon or ideas that could distract, and yet infused with a perfect balance of 'tech' to give it the air of a realistic near-future.

Anyone with a love for post cyberpunk or virtual reality fiction will LOVE this excellent work by a powerful and smart author.

Wow, what an interesting read this was! I thoroughly enjoyed the book and learning about the virtual gaming world. I will forever associate this book with swimming with a school of fish-the author does such a great job of describing his game play that you feel you are part of it as well. The characters were wonderful, and the plot kept me turning pages quickly.
This book gives you a lot to think about regarding the future of virtual gaming. Great job, Ramsey Isler!

A look into the future!

the premise of Ghosts of ARCADIA is a fascinating one that we inhabitants of the computational world can readily engage with. Essentially as the world becomes more interactive there will always be someone out there trying to push their own agenda. What is fun about this work is that it is entirely plausible somehow and one can almost glimpse the future reality just around the courner.
Our hero Miguel has followed his nose and the opportunities that his life has given him to investigate a seemingly dead story. The more he digs, the more he is dragged into the world of hacking and the world of ARCADIA.
It struck me that he has a very easy time getting people to help him out. Clearly his Pulitzer has a substantial amount of clout in getting some pretty nervous people to open up. That was to me the one criticism. Otherwise this is a very intriguing story that is very nicely paced. The outcome became clear as the book progressed but was still surprising and interesting.
Essentially this is an essay on the nature of life and reality and what will happen when virtual reality becomes even more enticing than it already is for some. What happens when we choose to live without actually being ther?

A Unique Reader Experience
