I had a difficult time getting interested in this story. The story line itself was interesting, but I didn't really "feel" the heroine. She didn't have much personality, and I didn't develop any real feelings for her. At the beginning we learn she has "issues" but the explanation of those issues left something to be desired. Her interactions with her surroundings were fairly dismal for the first half of the book. It wasn't unreadable, just easy to get distracted from.
The book improved greatly about half way through as we start getting into the mystery surrounding the bayou. The main character was still mostly emotionless, but the mystery and ghosts at least made the story interesting.
The romance aspect really had no merit. Their wasn't any relationship building between the two. They didn't even interact for more than a second to be a budding romance.
The trip back home for a week was so glossed over it was completely unnecessary to the story line.
The heroine's best friend was the most animated character in the book. She exhibited the most personality and was fairly well written into the plot.
Over all, this was an ok book. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it.
The writing was excellent, the characters were well fleshed out, and the story kept me enthralled throughout the entire book.
The town of Harmony Springs may be fictional, but I felt as if I wanted to visit. A beautiful description of the town as well as the characters who all seemed real and very likable made the story of the young teenagers meeting and then working together to save the town from dark forces, believable and fun.
The blossoming love interest between Abigail and Ray-Ray was well done, and the young reporter, Molly jumped off of the pages for me. I’m sure we all know someone like Molly, energetic and a touch overexcited at times, but a true friend.
I highly recommend this book for anyone, not just YA readers, who are looking for something light and fun to read.
