Colorfully illustrated oversize play mat tells the story of 600 million years of evolution in kid-friendly words and pictures. Illustrations include 67 bizarre ancient creatures, six mass extinctions, simple comments from "Charlie" Darwin throughout, footprints for kids to walk through time, and plenty more. The Activity Guide includes raucous physical games, artistic challenges, twists on classics like hopscotch and much more, for boys and girls ages 4-10. The accordion-fold design allows kids to read the Giant Evolution Play Mat like a book, stand it up like a fort, or spread it out on the floor for a full 18 feet of fun. Developed with scientists for accuracy and with kids for fun, the design is durable, washable, lightweight and environmentally friendly. Awards include Tillywig, Dr. Toy (Best 100 of 2009 and Best Green Toy of 2009), National Parenting Center and Great Dad. From the five-star review at What The Stuff Toy Reviews: "Five stars may not be enough! Hand over the Giant Evolution Play Mat to a group of children, or one child alone, and clear some space. In no time it'll be stretched looooong across the floor. But just wait until your kids turn it over! There are games, activities and adventures just waiting on the back. There is functionality packed throughout all 18 feet of the Giant Evolution Play Mat, with creatures, names and pronunciation guides, a time ruler, storybook narrative and more waiting for your kids to enjoy, it would be hard to ask for more! Not a single member of our review team, parents or kids, had ever encountered any game teaching evolution, let alone a game as cool and fun as this one! Absolutely original!" Parent testimonial, from Allison: "My seven year old son LOVES LOVES LOVES LOVES the Play Mat. He has spent so much time reading it, playing with it, walking and running on it. It is by far his favorite Christmas gift and by far the best thing we've purchased in a long time! THANK YOU!"

Right when we got it, we laid it out across the house, took out the pack of oversized animal cards we bought along with it, and my kid set to work matching them up with the animals on the mat. As she would come to get a new card, I would tell her the name of the animal on the card, read the description, and let her make her own little observations about it before looking for its place in the timeline. The next night she actually came up and asked to do it again.
The mat itself is made from recycled materials, and is very durable. It provides a huge amount of information to take in, but given a little time children AND adults can get a lot of learning and a lot of fun out of it. It also states clearly in its description that this information is current as of the time it was made, but there is always the very real possibility that changes and/or updates to evolutionary history can occur, and to keep that in mind.
Overall, an EXCELLENT teaching tool, not just for children-but designed for young children to to be able to effectively learn from it and keep interested.
An added bonus of this toy is that once you're kids are done using it to learn about animals and evolution they can make it into an awesome fort. My kids use this toy all the time, and when it's used as the walls of a castle, they still comment on the Spriggina (or other extinct creatures). I can't overstate the value of this item.
It's great to find a product that manages to teach and be fun at the same time -- and to have scientific accuracy, which is sometimes lacking in 'educational toys'. My biggest gripe with the set is that my daughter changed schools, and she wants me to buy another one for her new class.
