Product Description

THE GIANT MECHANICAL MAN is a charming comedic love story between Janice (Jenna Fischer), a woman in her 30's who has yet to learn how to navigate adulthood, and Tim (Chris Messina), a devoted artist who finds that his unique talents as a silver-painted street performer don't exactly pay the bills. Evicted from her apartment and forced to move in with her overbearing sister (Malin Akerman), Janice is on the receiving end of well-intentioned but misguided pressure to date an egotistical self-help guru (Topher Grace). Everyone seems to know what s best for Janice, but Tim helps her find her own voice and realize that it only takes one person to make you feel important. As a symbol of the urge to break free from a life defined for us, THE GIANT MECHANICAL MAN brings forward an optimism and feeling of belonging that can only come from falling in love.

"You know what's so great about you? You're real. You don't pretend like you've got it all figured out, like everyone else".

I think that quote encapsulates this movie perfectly. What a wonderful gem of a little indie, quirky, offbeat dramedy. I've really gotten into these type of movies the last few years or so, as I've gotten older and realized that, unlike others (or at least unlike they let on), while they seem to have it all figured out, I still seem as lost and searching as ever. And I'm ok with that. So as I've come to know and have survived (so far!) the disappointments of life, these movie plots and characters, of basically good hearted but flawed people looking for meaning, their place in the world, etc and struggling really speaks to me.

I loved both the leads - Tim and Janice - and related to them about equally, as I tend to do, as a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), INFP (Meyers-Briggs), introvert, and empath type guy. Tim's desire to follow his own path in life and Janice's shyness and awkwardness around others, as well as her failing to meet societal and familial expectations. I love how they made her the younger sister, too, since all too often the stereotype is the older sibling is the one all "put together" and the younger is the "mess", so I love how that's reversed here (despite Janice being adopted, but still - pretty cool). If only it was as easy standing up to family as it is when Janice does it in the movie, but I still loved that moment and felt so proud of her, realistic or not (the family seems to finally "magically" understand her as soon as she shows some assertiveness - I wish it was that simple in real life, I really do, but alas...).

Verdict: I loved and completely related to the story of 2 social misfits trying to succeed and survive and find their place in an "alpha" world that's sadly all too often about winning, success, competition, and "the bottom line", and too rarely about individuality, being yourself, and following your heart/your own path and having empathy for those of us who are "different" both by choice and because we have no choice (its complicated, haha). My all time favorite dramedy - I honestly can't recommend this enough. Just wish it wasn't unfairly (IMO) billed as a rom-com, since I feel that does the film a great injustice as its so much more than that (nothing against rom-coms!), and speaks to the heart of "the rest of us" who are currently or who have ever felt at least a little bit lost and alienated by life and the modern world. Like Tim, I've tried to follow my own path in life as well (just wish it paid better!) and, if you relate/agree with me at all, you can find me most often these days at twitter dot com/ShyLivesMatter Peace :)

I think this is a wonderful movie. I think Kirk Lee, who wrote it, is a very close observer of his own mind and he has given us a picture of the mind of a genius. The genius really does not know everything that his mind is telling him at any particular time (because the mind really does have "a mind of its own"!!) and yet he watches what comes to him and as a result may come to understand things that no one else has ever understood. Of course such a person often seems "abstracted and in the clouds" or "distracted and distant" (lines from the movie), and, of course, "weird". Also, like the two people in this movie the genius is "real" and "genuine" because he is trying to live by what he perceives inside him rather than what is expected of him

This is a gentle love story about two lost and alienated people who somehow find themselves, and one another, in a self-absorbed, artificial world. Simple and direct, the film is modest in its scope and sincere in what it is striving to present: a tender, hopeful love story that has some genuine insights about love in our modern, and all too confusing, society.
Jenna Fischer and Chris Messina, the film's protagonists, do a fine job in not overplaying their roles and staying true to their respective characters. Their fine performances are enhanced by an excellent supporting cast, whose work, greatly adds to the movie's success. Zach Braff, the movie's director, makes a good effort in keeping a nice pace to the movie and clearly unfolding the plot as the story progresses.
We need more movies like this one. Thank you, to all who participated in "The Giant Mechanical Man." You did a lovely job. I hope those of you who have the pleasure of watching this movie, enjoy it as much as I did. It's a little treasure.

I listen to The Office Ladies Podcast every Wednesday religiously, so when Jenna Fischer mentioned that she stars in and produced this movie, I HAD to see it. I started watching on Prime Video (free with ads) and within 10 minutes I was scrambling to buy the DVD. Money well spent!!

I bought this movie because Topher Grace is in it. I am a huge Topher fan. He has put out some of the finest performances since the demise of "That 70's Show". In this one, he is a sleazy, greasy manipulator and does it so well. But as far as the entire movie, it brought me to tears. It is mighty fine work and I recommend this to people who want a sensitive, lovely story of finding love in the oddest of places.

Despite reservations, I watched this romance with my family and I was prepared to be bored into a deep sleep in a short time. Instead, I found this a very pleasant and engaging film. I thought it was well acted, well written and well directed. I would watch it again. Of course, you know how it will turn out long before the ending, but that takes nothing from the film. Maybe not the greatest film ever made, but one I can recommend without reservation.

This was a charming and easy to watch film starring two people whose work I enjoy. I watched it on Netflix and then bought it so I could watch it with my mom. She thought it was good too.
