Many years ago, my toddler son and I found a dog-eared copy of The Giant Jam Sandwich at t library book sale. It quickly became a go-to due to the engaging rhyming and over-the-top-yet-child-logical story line. (If you're going to trap 4 million wasps in a jam sandwich, you're going to need a REALLY big loaf of bread that won't fit in your standard oven). If you're going to read a book many, many times, it needs to be one that keeps you entertained as well. I'm now a grandma and my granddaughter has two copies -- the new one to share with Mommy and Daddy and the old one that stays at Grandma's house.

What I like about books like the Giant Jam Sandwich is that they propose these grandiose, funny solutions to problems that I suspect children at first presume to be entirely rational responses in the mysterious world of grown-ups. Enormous loaf of bread, gallons of butter and strawberry jam, tractors modified with helicopter blades? And why not? As Bap's unanimously squeal-approved proposition states: "What do wasps like best to eat? Strawberry Jam! Now wait a minute..." So the book has everything-- even scientific non-facts. GJS also has going for it a great rhyme and meter without all the Seussian effrontery of meaningless pseudo-words.

I read this to my kids when they were small, and got it to use with preschool students. The story is that wasps fly into town and the baker suggests making a giant jam sandwich to trap them. It's very clever, and not necessarily your typical children's book. The rhyming is fun, and the pictures are detailed. Overall, I think its a terrific book.

I love this book, my kids had it so I wanted to get it for my preschool class. The book is worth five (5) stars; however I ordered the one with a read along CD. After getting three (3) of these I will be asking for a refund and just order one with no read along. I have all three (3) books going back, which is the reason I have only given four (4) stars. It isn't for the book, it's for whatever company is fulfilling (or not) the order. I have yet to receive a CD with any of the books. The book is worth five (5) stars.

This book was likely purchased through a school book fair back in the late 70s or 80s. As a kid, I was gentle and took good care of my books and my mom kept all of my stuff. So when I had children, I was able to share this story with them. They love it as well and we pretty much still have it memorized and they’re 11 and 8! I give this book at baby showers for older siblings and at birthdays for young ones of family and friends. You’ll find the story clever and the rhymes catchy and just silly enough. Love this one!

Not a parent but saw side video advertising children's book come to life and the most entertaining children were reading? this book and trying to eat the prop. The little boy who just gave up after performing a face plant in the middle of the sammie (trying to eat it) and looked up covered in jam definitely prompted me to order this book asap!

My son taught himself to read age 5 yrs old from this book. My husband and I read it to our sons every night for months. He knew it so well that he knew if we skipped a wood of a page. He is now 43 and an avid reader. I looked far and wide for this book to purchase my new nieces or nephews. They liked the story too.

I read this book so often to my kids that it fell apart after many years. I had to get another for my grandkids. My son bought one too so we have a book at each house. It's as fun to read as it is to hear! It's the most requested book by my kids and now my grandkids!

Great story, pictures, board book, but don't buy it expecting there to be an audio CD with it because depsite the product description saying "& CD" you don't actually get a CD with it.

Got this for my 18 month old nephew as I loved the illustrations as a child. I still love it now!! Love the kids books from the 70s. So much detail and surreality. He will probably get more out of it at ages 3/4 and up but he enjoys it now too. Beautifully illustrated. Lovely rhyming story which doesn't patronise. One of my favourites, even if it does advocate creative wasp killing...bees are better than wasps anyway ;)

Refreshing change of children's short story

A lovely rhyming book about a village coming together to make a giant jam sandwich to capture a plague of wasps. My 2 1/2 year old and 5 year old love this book and love the idea of capturing wasps in a jam sandwich. It is sweet, reads well and is different in tone in a nice way to other popular books for children atm which all seem similar in theme, tone and moral message. Just a bit more interesting.
I'd recommend!

I bought this for my infants class and we did a few activities around it. However it didn't really capture their imagination and it seemed dated. I slightly regretted getting it and trying to make something of not much.

Fantastic book. Got to be my new all time favourite children’s book and must have read it with my 4 year old at least 100 times already. Great story, funny verses and sometimes scary drawings (he’s scared of one of the ladies in one picture!). Highly recommended, just wish i’d known about it when I was 4 and had all those extra years to enjoy it. My son is planning on reading it with his Grandchildren!!
